September Is National Preparedness Month 2023

Regardless of the suggestive expiration date, when I take the lid off if there isn’t any fuzz and it’s the correct color, bon appetite!

I regularly eat food 5 years past the best by date. No issues. :slightly_smiling_face:

We actually don’t eat all that much in the way of store bought canned food here aside from some canned tuna. I will also occasionally take some canned foods when I am camping in my vehicle for work.

We do can (in glass jars with a pressure cooker) a fair amount of the vegetables from our garden whenever we have a bumper crop. We have a big batch of tomatoes in the green house at the moment which need to be turned into sauce and canned.

Good stuff but for those of us that need a medical supply for the rest of our lives; in our current economy it won’t happen. I have epilepsy and will be on meds the rest of my life. I only get a 3 months supply at a time and unless I buy out of my pocket there isn’t a chance to build a supply up. Then there is as the meds age, they lose their effectiveness.

Let’s not talk about the $1200+ a month shot I get for psoriasis and the arthritis it causes. I’m glad I only have some 20 years left the Lord willing. Also glad I didn’t pass this shite on to my son.

Yes sir. I did this exact thing before I took a mission trip over seas to a third world country.

@Shamrock

That’s good info. I didn’t think doctors would do such a thing. I guess if it’s not a narcotic the FDA will not pay too close attention.

Thanks for the info

Keep on livin’ my friend.

Stroke in 2019, two metal knees and metal hip 2020-2022 (died twice during surgeries), RA diagnosis (and the refrigerated Orencia prescription to go with it), no feeling in my feet due to RA-associated vasculitis. Every day on this side of the grass is a gift, don’t waste it on fools and other unimportant stuff.

Haha, they are going to have to drag me kicking and screaming into that hole in the ground. It’s all up to the Lord though and I’ll take every day He gives me. I might be-otch a lot but as you say every day is a gift.

My great mamaw lived to be 103 and from her mid 80s she was a tear-cat. I want to be just like her.

Nancy and I are growing more of our own veggies. I plan on storing enough potatoes,
carrots and onions to last most of the winter.

A cpl years ago I built a cpl potato grow boxes. Not sure what happened but they constantly lost dirt and kept sinking down into the boxes. From the YT videos I watched, I should have gotten about 150 lbs total from them. I got almost nothing. I will try again in the spring and make sure to use a weed barrier to retain the soil.

If possible DONT buy garden dirt, manure, compost or any potting soil from the big box stores. They are making/getting their materials from places that use Grazon which is a broad leaf plant killer. You guessed it, most if not all our veggies are broad leaf plants. It will ruin your garden and you will have to remove and replace the soil you have since Grazon doesn’t break down very quickly if at all. Worst of all, you have to figure out which product has it and the producers put a warning in small print on the bags. There are some interesting YT videos made by gardeners talking about it.

Probably when there is a hurricane and your area is without power for two weeks, you aren’t driving much, and should be starting with a full charge knowing a hurricane is coming.

But, I’ll bet you can add charge to an EV using solar. Why not? People charge their battery backups (like Tesla “walls”) with solar all the time…betting they charge EV’s too.

Side benefit of EV, it’s also a store of electricity, with the right hookup, you can power stuff in your home from the EV. Though I’d rather primarily use gas for that, it takes a lot of gas to power a generator large enough to match that kind of 240V amperage…let alone the kind of clean power you can get from an EV’s batteries

There is also the hybrid F150 powerboost as an option here for power

We are lucky here, the City and the Landfill (dump) collects leaves and branches.
The composting is done over years, they will have 7 or 8 rows 100’ long, 10’ high, the first
row is the collection from this year and most everything has been run thru a chipper.
They also collect water weeds from the channel between the lake and river.
The last row is for use in gardens, well composted and of good mixture, you can fill your own containers, or the loader will put a scoop into your truck bed all at no charge. :+1:

It takes a lot of PV to charge a EV due to the conversion loss’s.

My uncle was telling me pretty much the same in the town he lives in up NW Indiana way. I’ve looked on the internet here around my area and neither city/town does this. They will come pick up a dead cow or other large item for free but nothing like what you say.

I bought a yard sweeper just to pick up grass clippings and fallen leaves. All going into the compost pile for the winter to be tilled in when spring comes. What’s real big fun is spraying down the chickens when they jump up into the raised bed I built for mom.

My pest problem is Grey Squirrels digging in my containers. I just put out more red pepper and cinnamon. If I got really hungry, we could live for a week on squirrel. :yum:

If the squirrels get to be too big a problem, get a branch/2x4 they can easily travel on and set a snare. Those little varmints ate all my corn one year. I set the snares wrong and never got a one of them but they didn’t get near the snares anymore. :smiling_imp:

If they become more of a problem, I have several recipe’s for Squirrel gravy with mashed taters or rice. I can shoot them here with an air pistol with a good backstop. :smiling_imp:
