Range targets - show them off!

First 25 were the the two magazines of carry ammunition, (hornaday critical defense) basically dumped at around 1 second intervals at 15 yards.

I then pulled it into 10 yards and did 24 rounds (two magazines, empty chamber) of Winchester white box ball ammo on a Mozambique drill.

Then I taped up all the existing holes and fired the remaining 76 rounds of Winchester white box practicing Mozambique from 5 yards. (Final 4 was double tap chest, double tap head)

Edit, this is also a 75% scale target, so the 5 yards is more like 7 against a full size target.

Edit edit for those who do not already know, I carry a SIG365X with a Wilson combat grip module.

Transition between 5 small targets - taking a shot as soon as you see dot withing the shooting area.
10 yards, 4 tries - 20 rounds total.

What I found interesting - my accuracy (or I should say my grip) became constantly better after second shot. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:
I think I was overconfident taking fist shots… :upside_down_face:

Same, we remember the last few shots as we get ready to leave the range.

We don’t remember how lackadaisical we were with the first few shots that went wild!

And by the time we go back to the range?

The blue ring 7 is 10" x 7" - close to A Zone of IPSC target.

What did you see other than you were overconfident? What happened to target 2? What happened at target three? Then target 4, good shooting!

I am curious, what did you notice when you were transferring from the center zone to the head?

The main thing I notice is from low ready I’m basically “point shooting” my center mass shots, then when I transition to the head shot I’m actively looking for the front sight.

Hard to see anything. It almost like predictive shooting where you have to only confirm your dot in split second. In this case I can only trust my grip.

Gun at the low ready. The timer goes off while you are focused on the first target. You draw the gun up and spot the red dot on the target and pull the trigger. At this time do you watch where your round went? You focus on the second target and align the red dot to the target and when the red dot is over the target you pull the trigger. Do you follow your red dot to the next target, or do you focus on the target and bring the red dot to it? You have to lower your sight to the target below your sights. This is where you have to find the target, you do not already have a peripheral view of the target. After that shot you have to go to the bottom of the target, and it is the same situation of lowering to the next target. Then you have your peripheral view of the last target, and your final shot is usually accurate.

I shoot two eyes open, so in spite of my focus being the front sight, I’m still able to see an overall sight picture, even parts of the target obscured by the gun from the perspective of my dominant eye.

I’ve never shot a course of fire like @Jerzees posted, but when switching from the center mass to the head, my focus shifts to the new target as soon as the last shot is fired, then I bring the front sight to where I want the new hole to appear.

    • Keep head and eyes forward.

    • Wiggle fingers slowly into your field of view and stop when you first see them.

    • Repeat from multiple directions.

  3. Optokinetic Strips – Use moving patterns to stimulate peripheral awareness

  4. Dynamic Visual Acuity Training – Move objects or lights in the periphery to improve detection speed

  5. Saccadic Training – Practice rapid eye movements to scan wide areas quickly

  6. Real-World Scanning – Walk through busy areas or use a window with active traffic to train your eyes to track movement outside the direct view

Tips for Effective Targeting

  • Keep head and eyes forward to maximize peripheral field coverage

  • Scan systematically—move your gaze in a controlled pattern to cover all quadrants.

  • Use cues like a fixed point in the center to anchor your focus while expanding awareness outward.

  • Practice regularly—short daily sessions can build sensitivity over time.

By combining structured drills with real-world application, you can improve your ability to detect, track, and respond to stimuli in your peripheral vision, enhancing safety and performance in both everyday and high-demand situations.

As a professional driver, I use peripheral vision constantly, without even thinking about it.

It bleeds into my situational awareness, and general life as well.

Peripheral vision is very important, it creates fast response to stimuli around us. But to be accurate you actually must force your vision to focus on the smallest part of the target you want to hit fast and accurately.

Your hands always follow your vision. Exactly the way @Will_B mentioned:

It’s important when you must shoot multiple targets in fast pace. There is no time for perfect dot position and 2 -3 seconds of dot confirmation.
If you trust your stance and grip and you know that your dot (sights) follow your eyes, you just look, move then press the trigger… and the hole should appear where you were staring at.

Shot the rxm with the new vortex venom enclosed RDS. I like it but it won’t adjust. I went extreme in all different directions and still shot the same. Its minute of man but I would like it to shoot better.

I tried shooting at different spots just to verify. I dont know about this sight.

I did trim the tree up though…

when i just do a quick shoot, I just lean the target against a tree. Serious shooting i have a different place for it
