Proper Procedures

In life a person tends to have a pattern in their lives. You go to bed at a curtain time, you go to work at a curtain time. I bet you drive the same route to work every day. Well, crimes have a pattern too! Noy all crimes but if you listen to the news, you can see where and when these crimes happen. The convenience store, the gas station, and usually late at night too.

By being aware of the areas to avoid and at what times to avoid it then you remove yourself from stepping into a bad situation. If you really do not need to be there then avoid it. The number one rule is Avoid getting into a bad situation. This is your first step in self-defense. It is not living your life in fear, but it is living your life without being in a bad situation. Get your gas during the day. Do not go to a cash machine at night. You can do this during the day.

Use your situational awareness to pay attention to what is going on around you. You can use it to see where crimes and what crimes are committed and what areas and when they usually happen. I have to drive through an area called Rainier Ave. to get to the V.A. hospital. This area is in the news on a regular basis, but it is between midnight and four in the morning. The major store I go to get groceries is a no go at night. My dentist’s office is in another bad area but usually only at night.

The other mourning my wife and I were on the porch, and we heard a gunshot and a scream from behind our house, we went back into the house. I could not call 911 because I had no immanent information other than a gunshot and a scream.

If you utilize your situational awareness properly you will do yourself a favor.

When you are in your vehicle and are stopping pay attention to your surroundings. It makes you a safer driver and can keep you out of trouble too.

It is your Transistional places that you are vulnerable. Be very vigilant to your surroundings at all times. Watch for that guy hanging out at the gas station or in front of that convenient store. Especially when you go to your car from anywhere or when you get out of your car. Even if it is at home.

If you practice the proper procedures, you can avoid any trouble. These things can be observed by reports, news, and friends. I am sure you have watched Active Self Protection on YouTube.

Be safe, train, and practice. It is your safety that counts.

I always do this when I can. But when I work long days out in the middle of the desert during the winter my day starts in the dark and ends in the dark. So I often have no choice but to fill up the tank in the dark.

I always give the gas stations a good look around before pulling in. I do this regardless of whether it is night or day. If I see anything the least bit sketchy I go find another gas station.

That is so great advice. I think of it just like muscle memory ( or as @Craig_AR put it myelination of our neurological pathways), develope good patters, develope good habits. I always look for the good things in life and when I do that the bad thing stick out like a sore thumb. That is my situational awareness. I think that is key to living a happy long life. That and being responsibly armed. Stay frosty.

With stupid people
At stupid times
Doing stupid things

Think of things that would lead to bang. Do things that will keep you left of bang.

I would add if there is a place you would go only if carrying, then do not go regardless of the time of day.

If you have observed animals in the wild you should have noticed they never make a direct approach to their lair, cave or nest (if the next is on the ground). Bird are an exception because they have a pretty good view of everything. The indirect approach is surely applicable to the urban jungle. I taught my wife to circle the parking lot before picking a spot (one with tactical advantages), and to visually sweep the parking lot before leaving the store or business and returning to the car. Her approach from the store/business is also not a straight line. If she sees anything that makes her uncomfortable she waits until the situation resolves itself or she asks the store/business manage for an escort to her car (they always comply, btw, at lease in our experience. I think this is a carry over from my BSA days (early 60’s). All my firearm students also get this indoctrination.

Unfortunately, this is the everyday American lifestyle in every community neighborhood, town, and city all across the Country that we all have NO CHOICE but to face and adjust accordingly. That’s why many of us who are brave enough to USE OUR 2A RIGHTS and utilize that RIGHT THAT SCARES the bajibees out of the anti 2A government that want to disarm us, but allow criminals to freely run rampid committing atrocities to the innocent that we have no choice but to be ready for self defense at any time, any where that we are even at home. Excellent post.

Two practical things I’ll add.

  1. Watch other people. You can’t always see everything from your vantage point, but if you see someone react to something you get a clue of what is happening.

  2. Flashlight. As Sootch00 likes to say, illumination is your #1 safety tool.

I have been looking. Itis hard when you have so many requirements for a place to move. I do not want to move someplace that I am in no better situation. The good part is I can cook!

I think with all those no goes and hearing shots and screaming out the back door, I’d seriously consider relocating. :us_outlying_islands:

Grammar rules along with cursive writing in the US are on their way to extinction. As an ESL individual who made the effort to speak and write correctly in respect to my adopted country, it used to bother me. My view has changed. Online discourse imitates speech on the street and if the popularity of emojis continues to spread, we will soon be communicating using something akin to Egyptian hieroglyphics.
