Hello everyone. Does anyone here has any experience with non- lethal defense like Byrna Pepperball Launcher?
Does the mechanics of using one work the same as a using a handgun.
Also is anyone here familiar with tactics using one?
If so please let me know. I am new here. I am a Security Leader and have been doing volunteer security since 2011. I am also a US Army Iraq War Veteran ( Convoy Security/ Guard Duty / Access Control and Signal Communications) I thank the Lord Jesus Christ that I did not have to take a life and that my life was not taken however I learned some foundational knowledge of security)
Nice to meet you all, I am here for non lethal defense ( Counter Crime, Terrorism and creating measures to prevent crime / terror before it stats, martial arts etc) however I would like to know more about handguns.
Iâve been interested in this for my wife. She travels with the kids a lot. I under stand her not wanting to manage a gun with all her luggage and the kids driving her nuts. This would be cool because itâs non lethal. My biggest concern is it not working when you need it. Centerfield rounds are pretty darn reliable, Iâm not sure I trust co2 cartridges for self defense.
Welcome to the Fold Brother
youâre right where youâre suppose to be!
Thank you for your Service!
As for the pepper ball âLunchersââŠI donât eat them they give me indigestion ! WHAT? No one else thought that? yeah right! Happy Christmas Chasz
I bought a Byrna Launcher for my wife. She walks in the evenings. We are very happy with it. When we practice with it, weâre confident that if it had to be used against an attacker it would be VERY effective. The pepper spray and tear gas ammo can disable a subject for up to 45 minutes allowing for my wife to escape the danger area. Fortunately, she hasnât had to use it, but I feel more comfortable that she can protect herself if the need arises.
Actually working in the prison system we use multiple models for different deployment needs. They do their job pretty well on single targets to group area dispersion. Not to mention the entertainment in the aftermath⊠(not said out loud)
Thank you and Merry Christmas! Thank you for the links! I am drawn to Byrna because I use non lethal techniques however I still want to ensure that they are effective non-lethal defenses.
@Chasz Welcome to the community! As already youâve received great input and check out the great tips that BRUCE26 is showing. If you do choose to purchase a BYRNA Pepper Ball Pistol, throw caution on the various colors available since the âBLACKâ one kinda looks like a real weapon that can be mistaken for one and could lead to not too good of a result . Maybe go with bright colors just like tasers that LEOâs use (yellow, orange, etcâŠ) Just saying. Stay safe!
I personally am not a fan of anything that looks like a gun, and is handled and deployed like a gun, but isnât a gun. Somewhere on the USCCA website in the ask an attorney video series Kevin (LE) and Tom (lawyer) are not fans either.
Big fan, however, of traditional pepper spray. Sabre, Fox Labs, POM.
Regular pepper spray is smaller, easier to carry, easier to conceal, does NOT resemble a firearm, less expensive, more reliable, and proven over and over and over again on that reliability. Itâs on basically every police officerâs belt, many security guards, many private citizens, used in jails and prisons, etc. Thatâs my recomendation
In all non-lethal situations - I RUN AWAY. All lethal situations I use lethal countermeasures. Being an ex-cop and ex-Spec Ops military gang member, I have pulled the trigger too many times to count, so I have learned to walk or run forward pulling my trigger and also, fun fact here, pulling my trigger walking back or even running backwards as well.
I am not a cop any longer so Miranda rights, use of force law fare, is now expedited for me. I avoid the usual suspected venues of trouble, I look around and walk, my PTSD screams at me to avoid the masses, and most public places, the world is on fire, so I am not a believer in non-lethal anything, simply leave me alone, and i will do the same to you.
I also would not bring a pepper gun/can (or knife) to a gun fight. These toys means you have to get closer, I donât like closer anymore, bad thing happen. Being in court a lot, I can see some stupid juror wondering if you should have used the lesser lethal of force tool on your tool-belt and maybe not have gone to the firearm right away, well, since you had it on you, and they would then ask themselves, why have it and not even try it in the first place? Understand, another fun fact here, those 12 idiots in that box may have never even owned a firearm, but certainly have pepper spray - because they trust pepper spray will save them.
No thank you, question off that table for me, I carry a gun, hate to use it, but, i respond to the perps stupid choices.
If you can safely run away, that is a solid strategy. Itâs not always possible though.
Pepper spray doesnât mean you have to get closer since we should be comparing similar levels of force, in which case empty hands (how far you can reach) are closer than the spray distance of OC.
If lethal force is justified, lethal force is justified. Do you not carry a gun because they might ask why you didnât use your fists or feet instead?
If all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. Be careful with lethal force as your only tool
