Oregon is facing a ballot initiative, IP28, that could criminalize hunting, fishing, and other animal-use practices if it qualifies and passes, but it has not yet become law.
affecting not only recreational hunters and anglers but also farmers, ranchers, commercial fishermen, pest control operators, veterinarians, and even tribal members exercising treaty rights The initiative would also impact livestock breeding practices, scientific research involving animals, and animal husbandry procedures such as dehorning or castration. Approximately one million Oregonians could face criminal liability under the proposed law.
As of early June 2026, proponents of IP28 have submitted over 126,000 signatures, surpassing the 117,173 valid signatures required to qualify for the ballot, though verification is still pending.
At least, CA still has this: “Los Angeles mayoral candidate and City Councilmember Nithya Raman proposed an emergency ban on backyard barbecues and open flame cooking during high-risk “Red Flag Warning” days to reduce wildfire dangers.”
This is not going to pass and even if by some miracle it did the Governor would veto it in a heartbeat. The state needs recreational hunting and fishing along with commercial fishing and ranching to generate tax revenue to maintain the state parks.
Yeah, but who is/are the idiot or idiots in power who would even consider something like this to be a good idea? These are clearly not rational representatives of the people.

IP28 would also expand protections against animal sexual assault by classifying both the masturbation and impregnation of animals as sexual assault even when done for agricultural purposes (under current state law, the same actions would only count as sexual assault if done for the human being’s sexual gratification).
Who knew this was such a large issue in Oregon, but it does explains some things!
PETA and several other Animal Rights groups put up $300,000 to get the signatures. Think about it though they literally paid about $3 a signature and the people who gathered the signatures probably said something like, “do you want to prevent animal cruelty in Oregon sign this”.
Other than a few short summers at my grandpa’s farm, I don’t know much about agricultural practices. So, I got my “education” from episodes of The Ranch and Yellowstone.
This is a practice that is very common for stallions and bulls when dealing with show or sport animals. It’s done to prevent injury to the mare or cow. When an animal is worth more than their meat you want to protect it. I dated a girl in college who gave hand jobs to stallions for this purpose.
