Muddy River Comfort Carry Hybrid IWB Holster?

Is anybody using this model? My main question is regarding the “Suede Comfort / Sweat Barrier”. Is it comfortable against bare skin? And does it hold up to daily use?

The other holster I am considering is

There are several tradeoffs between these two:

  • The Muddy River will ship within about 6 days. The Craft wouldn’t be ready until January 15. Delivery date is not critical for me, but I’d like to get one of them on order to take advantage of Black Friday discounts.
  • The Muddy River is similar to a Black Arch hybrid that has been comfortable for many years. I’d buy Black Arch this time except they don’t offer it for the new carry.
  • The Craft full leather is similar to a Galco V-Hawk that can become uncomfortable against bare skin if worn several days in a row. My only hesitation for the Craft is that it would require a tucked T-shirt to wear for multiple days.

Thanks in advance for any and all feedback :+1:

HI @Gary_H .
I’m guessing you’d like to take an advantage of Black Friday and spend some money right now :slightly_smiling_face:

I never bought these particular holsters, but I’ve got two from Muddy and one from Craft sitting in my drawer.

I actually liked both… and stopped using them after few months, however there were different reasons.

So…

  1. Muddy
  • I love their holsters, especially the fact that the owner is very responsive and willing to make changes according to Customer’s needs.
  • kydex is a kydex… I don’t know if leather can compare with it for concealed, especially IWB holsters. (my opinion)
  • the holster you want to by has a big PROS - full size sweat guard. There is nothing worse for firearm than direct contact with human skin, not even thinking about your skin being irritated by handgun slide serrations or grip texture.
  1. Craft
  • great leather piece of work, super high quality. Nothing to complain about this
  • mine wasn’t so stiff and eventually started collapsing when pressed with belt, usually once I change my position. It’s not a problem, when firearm is holstered, but was a huge issue when I tried to reholster.
  • after few months of intensive usage (dry fire practice, training sessions, classes) the holster inside looked really bad and the muzzle started snagging on leather parts (see pictures)

  • big CONS of the holster you want to buy - no sweat guard at all.

What I really like about Muddy’s Hybrid holster is the fact that this is actually a kydex body attached to the leather, so there is no way it will collapse or it wears out over time… and of course it gets positive click.
I’m guessing that all the parts can be separated, so leather part can be easily cleaned.

The reasons of stopping using them both:

  • Craft - obvious reason, already posted
  • Muddy - I just found better holsters for my handguns

Good luck with your purchase :crossed_fingers:

Thank you so much for taking the time to give me such a detailed response. I especially appreciate the Craft holster feedback :+1:

The FN Reflex XL just hit the market in January so holster selections are still pretty limited.

Muddy River Tactical has been always my “primary” hostler to go, if no other option is available.
I’ve got 3 - 4 favorite manufacturers, but the new handgun on the market is always challenging.

Muddy is not very expensive, so I use their products till the moment I find a holster from my favorite’s list.

It looks a lot like my Crossbreed minituck which I can forget I’m wearing.

After 2.5 years of wear and lots of dry fire practice as well as live fire from concealed the leather relaxed and the retention wasn’t there anymore,…. Still super comfortable though!

Regardless I did buy a new one for better retention.

I’ve read that same review of many hybrid holsters. I’ve been using a Black Arch Protos hybrid since March 2017 on an almost daily basis. I did replace the backer in April 2020 because they introduced a better padded version then. So, technically I’ve been using the current backer almost 6 years, but almost 8 years on the Kydex shell.
