It’s good to see that they are trying to do the right thing (being pro-2A). But this will probably have minimum impact in reality.
I do a lot of 3D printing, with various machine types. And I can honestly say that I would probably never print anything that would be used as a part of a firearm. I just wouldn’t trust it to be strong or reliable enough.
Now if someone was into high-end metal 3D printing, or other similar tech, it may be different. But I’m guessing that the actual number of people that ‘3D print guns’ is actually pretty small. And it’s probably done as more of a test or novelty than anything serious.
The one exception would be printing things like training guns, which I have done. But those aren’t regulated with or without laws like this.
Isnt Braggs proposal to limit/regulate thing like this or do training guns not use CAD programs.
Yeah, agreed. But I would consider that to be more of an ‘accessory’.
To clarify my original statement , I was referring more towards any part that actually makes a firearm a firearm, or that makes it go bank. There are probably many examples of other accessory type items. But none of them either create or destroy a firearm from being a firearm.
I would argue that a printed polymer frame would function fine in many applications…. Can’t have a functioning firearm without the frame.
Yeah, probably. But most of the coastal states are so extreme on their policies that I tend to discount them as outliers more than anything. Whatever NY or CA or OR does has no real affect on the nation as a whole. I would also expect that if Braggs proposal cane to be, it would eventually be thrown out in the courts. But again, it’s NY, so who know what could happen.
Really? for the long run?
Typical hobbyist 3D printing materials have nowhere the strength of polymers that manufactured firearms do. Yeah, a 3D printer frame may work for a few shots. But would you really trust being on the ‘good’ end of a gun if the frame ever failed in operation?
It will be interesting to see if anyone here actually HAS printed a critical part for a firearm, and how it worked out in the long run.
I would wager yes, even possibly on a long gun,…
Obviously not a barrel or a bolt.
More my thoughts were the same as yours that the standard hobbyist setup doesn’t have the size to make many long gun parts,…. But a custom frame for my Sig 365? I see no reason it wouldn’t work.
I keep looking at Montana like the hot chick I want to date, but then I keep remembering I am married to Oregon and all her baggage. Well and I am not sure how I would do living in a landlocked state. I do love the Ocean and I have property in Eastern Oregon that I am planning on retiring on, which is why I am married to the state, but she keeps getting uglier and starting to nag all the time.
I used to think about becoming a Montana resident quite often and now I THINK about how to go about it almost every day. I know what that usually leads to. it HAS happened before…
