The guide rod shouldn’t be protruding that far out @Scoutbob.
It’s an easy fix my brother and it doesn’t involve cleaning. Man I wish I was there to fix it for you.
@Scoutbob .
I’ve found my old recoil spring assembly.
Look at yours - there is a big gap at the tip. Just take the assembly out from the slide and tighten the tip screw.
I can even see the thread…
Thank you! I don’t like that . They make these guns so fast and I sometimes wonder if they all get made well. Is the Taran Tactical one reliable?
I’ll probably email smith and they’ll probably send me a new one that does the same thing . I’ll look at tightening the spring too, I just don’t think I should have to do that on a gun that’s seen so little range time.
This has pushed me to try the G19X for a few weeks for now. I’ve been wanting to try it. I’ve been super busy so I’ve just been clipping on the M&P.
Maybe I’ll get a new recoil spring. I just don’t like changing stock parts much.
It’s hard to tell from your pic… is there space between the bottom of the bolt and the silver guide rod or is it just the shadow in your pic?
There’s a space
Though I think @Jerzees is right. It should be pretty easy to tighten the nut… BUT I don’t currently have a good vice. I need to get one, but it’s very rare I need one (only for gun stuff usually).
I did check this, but it turns out the protrusion is occurring due to the nut being slightly unscrewed. I’ll have to find a way to tighten it, or get a new one. I don’t like after market parts much, but I might do some research and see.
… is this a question for real?
You know, that Taran Tactical made guns for John Wick, don’t you?
Ok. I’m kidding… Yes it is.
You can buy factory specs - 15lb spring. I’m using 13lb - the gun shoots a little but softer. 100% reliable.
I only ask because some big name products are unfortunately gimmicks . I might try one out
.
You know @Scoutbob maybe if you contact Smith&Wesson they may send you a new one no charge. Their customer service is good.
I’ll definitely get in touch with them and see what they say. This gives me a chance to try carrying the Glock for a bit.
@Scoutbob … One tiny screw… and you wanna give up M&P in favor of Glock?
Yeah wassup with that @Scoutbob. Don’t be switching to Glock.
Just take the guide rod out of the Glock and use it for your M&P
I think all you M&P pros have this problem covered. But I will say that I always consider the recoil spring and guide rod to be consumable parts and always order a spare or two whenever I buy a new pistol.
Though they definitely should last longer than 500 rounds. I replaced the one in my Glock 19 after several thousand rounds even though the spring and cheap plastic guide rod showed no signs of excessive wear. Wouldn’t want to wait and find out it had finally worn out at an inopportune moment!
Agree 100 percent with @Shamrock.
Glocks are all hype, stick with the S&W!
A little locktite will keep that from happening again. Just don’t over do it. Additionally a pair of vice grips with a cloth buffer will do in a pinch, but i wouldn’t recommend it for long term.
S&W emailed me and told me to call in for a new recoil assembly. When I’m less busy I’ll give them a call and get a new recoil spring.
I would be surprised if it’s normal though. I reported to smith what I thought was rust on a recoil spring in the past and it turned out to be just red marking for the caliber of the gun. They still sent me a free one.
It makes me think they don’t necessarily know what normal is, they just send you the parts if they’re uncertain.
I am happy with my 19X. I really may stick with Glock down the road.
