Stand your ground means you do not have a duty to retreat. It he was in the comfort of his home and went to confront the thief. A prosecutor would be very likely to portray him as the initial aggressor. And the prosecutor would, without a doubt, harp on the fact that the weapon was charged to incite fear in the would be thief now turned victim.
The federal statute for stealing mail is in 18 U.S.C. Chapter 83 - Postal Service and applies only to the United States Postal Service and their contractors. If the delivery was by Amazon, UPS, FedEx or any other delivery service, the theft is purely a matter of state law.

I have a funny bone and look for humor in almost every situation. That said, this is not funny! In fact, it is irresponsible. This thread alone provides a clear misunderstanding on use of force, state laws, federal laws and property crimes to say the least. Now more than ever is not the time for reckless “humor.”
