Into the Fray: Fighting in Close

This Into the Fray goes really well with the conversation we’re having about Keep control of your gun. Fighting in close quarters is a different mindset than what we train at the range for that 5-10 foot range. And Kevin also addresses shooting at the pelvic girdle (which was discussed in the slightly hijacked conversation here: Need a legal opinion: headshots)

Will you train this on the range or in dryfire training?

Read the article about point shooting with this. They go together like guns and ammo.

Here’s another operator/instructor who has some good research information for too close quarters combat: Fighting in the Clinch. Craig Douglas, Field Notes Ep. 45 Another opportunity to practice with a friend or two and up the skills set.

The training with Craig Douglas, above, develops knowledge of in close combat with wrestling techniques and is a group of advanced techniques to learn. As you watched it you likely had to remind yourself to keep focused - it is a long presentation but a useful set of instructions.

The research material here MUST SEE: A Life-Saving CQC Weapon Retention Tactic?! The G-WRAP is not presented as a professional advanced class; the video space has an immediacy due to the way it was shot. This recording introduces another technique that helps deal with significant weaknesses of some of the training we have seen here to date. This is more advanced than that shown in the “Into the Fray:” but if you are ready for it will give you options to consider.

Whatever approach you think you would use in a situation will only have a chance to work if we practice it with partners to help build muscle memory/unconscious competence.

Note: there are additional techniques offered near the end of the recording. I think you’ll find them just as worthy to consider adding to your tool chest.
