My time off from work meant a lot of reading. Mainly stuff about Self defense shooting. Whats surprising is how many people make stupid mistakes after they use their firearms in a self defense shooting. The main take away from everything I read was dont talk to the police. They may seem to be on your side but everything you say will be used against you.
Make sure you are the one to call the police first. Keep it simple. You are being recorded so keep that in mind.
Avoid putting macho sayings on your firearm. Like those clever muzzle devices that say 'Look for the flash". In one of the USCCA magazines they reported a cop who had “You’re F**ked” on the dust cover of his AR. Keep your firearm and , dare I suggest, your car free of stuff that may look like you are just looking to dust somebody. Be the gray man in everything firearms related. Dont advertise anything that even suggests you own a firearm.
The USCCA magazine wrote some very good pieces about this. Pick up a old one every once in a while and re-read it. Knowledge is power. You cant know too much about this subject.
Make your lawyer happy if you ever (God Forbid) ever have to take a life in self defense.
These are things that I cover in great detail in my courses that I instruct. People don’t like to hear it sometimes. But as I say in class: “Hear me say it now in class or, hear your attorney say it later during an arraignment/bond hearing”.
Stay safe out there.
Great advice.
1 other my CCW instructor gave us…if you are not willing to risk prison for whatever you are protecting with you r firearm…don’t use it. He expounded by saying property is replaceable but life is not. Act accordingly. I find that a great test for should I or shouldn’t I.
Continually learn and stay safe out there.
The cops are real good at acting like you “Have To” answer their questions. They tell you it makes you look bad if you lawyer up. The 5th amendment ("…nor shall be compelled in any criminal case to be a witness against himself…") is clear but once in court, they’ll play the “Uncooperative” card. Really, just shut up, don’t talk, name, rank and serial number, so to speak, is all, after that say nothing to the police OR to any witnesses.
Same here, our instructor put it like this “We protect lives not stuff”.
I am unable to comment at this time. I would like to speak to my attorney!
Concealed Carry Magazines reports Defensive shootings monthly in their section designated for it. What I noticed over several of the articles is that a caliber type is always omitted. Why is this important?
It proves a statistical fact of why it’s hard to determine through national reporting systems what calibers have injured or killed when used.
It makes me wonder if caliber information were to be added if it would resolve several issues. Common used caliber choices, affects of the calibers ( would surprise some to learn that a .22 WMG or .380 ACP) were used with effect to stop a criminal.
In a way I’m glad it doesn’t state the calibers used for self defense. It keeps criminals guessing what a person may have based on gender / age factors.
These are the thoughts I’ve reflected on when reading the articles. Another final thought is how it often mentions that an assailant escapes the immediate defensive gun fire by running away a short distance or dying in an ambulance while in route to the hospitals. Again… caliber?
Some as we know in the community are immediate. We could talk a week straight about immediate expectancy and delayed outcomes.
@Aaron40 , and everyone else, I recommend going to YouTube and looking watching “The Best Handgun Caliber - A Real World Study”. It’s interesting and revealing, and best of all it’s based on real life events rather than models or simulations or educated guesses.
Thank you for sharing this @Kenneth94. I find myself giving this type of advice to lots of people. It’s amazing how many people come and talk to me about what they want to do with their firearms, now that they are learning that I am on the security team at my church.
Why? You done something wrong?
I recommend searching for “caliber doesnt matter”, enlightening material. If they did provide a caliber next to each news article, you would still not be able to conclude which caliber is “better”. Arm yourself for whatever you can shoot with most confidence and carry most consistently.
As far as criminals, they will by definition lean toward smaller, more concelable guns. A thug waving an SBR is an aberration, a thug pocketing a 380 is more like it.

Very good advice that I try to emphasize in my classes. Don’t even THINK about buying ammunition called anything like “widow maker” or anything “aggressive.” Ammunition labeled “Self Defense” is often identical in function but is much better in court when the prosecutor asks “what your bullets are called.”
I ran across this on Native American proverbs. I thought it should pertain to us all.
"It is better to have less thunder in the mouth, and more lighting in the hand."
-Apache proverb
The thing I think about is if they can still run away they could just as easily run towards you and continued the assualt.
Great video JoeC. What I found interesting was during the Rittenhouse trial the Prosecution tried to use Kyle not talking to the police as “evidence” that he may have committed murder and was using it “change his story.” Rightfully the Judge reprimanded the prosecutor.
Thanks, @Christopher_S1. It’s super important to remember and it was hilarious watching the judge fry that prosecutor.
