I think the rule of thumb for a winter’s worth of firewood applies here. When you think you have enough, double it.

Lol
That’s smart

Yeah, I was paying $15 and some change at the range.

There’s also the chance of magazine malfunction to worry about, not just no. of rounds.

I personally have 5 to 6 for every gun I have

I’m of the 2/3 per piece camp. (#1 Son is of the “gotta have a dozen”:smirk:). I think it’s a personal thing frankly. I’ve been actively shooting since before most folks here were born (1960). I’ve owned a LOT of different weapons and n my experience I’ve never, ever had a magazine failure. Yes, I know it “can” happen, and yes if you drop mags, damage the feed lips you’re likely to have a problem. I take care of my stuff, and so far,it’s always taken care of me. A Ruger .22 from 1961 still has the single original mag it came with. I learned to shoot with it, my Son learned to shoot with it and my grandkids learned with it. Round count is in the stratosphere and the only issues ever were with some junk ammo I bought 20 years ago. Switched ammo and it ran (and still runs) like a fine watch. Got a .45 my Dad brought home from WW2 with two original GI mags . Countless rounds fired over the years. The only malfunctions, ever, we’re with hollowpoint ammo. Put ball in it and it will run all day. Ditto for my 1969 vintage Browning HiPower and my 1972 Walther PPK/S. Just my experience so YMMV. I just do not see the need for a ton of magazines for a pistol used in” normal” service. (Competition shooters who drop/throw their empty mags will certainly have different experiences than mine.

Two good questions would be: How many rounds do you think you might need, and What can you comfortably carry?

My personal opinion is I should have at least 12 rounds on me at all times. I can give you no logic for that it is just my comfort level, has been for years. Perhaps because I normally carry a 1911 and have for almost 35 years, often I carry one spare magazine, which gives me 17 rounds total. More recently I have purchased an XD Mod. 2, a double stack 9mm 1911 and a double stack .45ACP 1911. But I still carry a spare magazine for each of them. In the case of the Double stack 9mm, that gives me a total of 35 rounds total. The spare magazine is more to address a magazine failure and need to change it. A very unlikely situation, but so is a defensive shooting, but I still prepare for that as well.

Yea the gun I have is 15+1 and I’ll carry an extra mag with me
15 rounds is a lot and if I can put someone down with that many. Might as well hand everything over lol
But I’d rather have 15+ and an extra mag. Cause never know if it will be one attacker or more

This is a valid point to take into consideration. Not only for competition shooters, but shooters who plan on doing serious training as well. Anyone doing “speed reloads“ rather than “tactical reloads” will be dropping mags, shortening their life, and requiring you to keep extra.

Similar here… a baker’s dozen magazines for my 9mm EDC pistol. 1 (loaded with HPs) in the weapon, 2 (loaded with HPs) on my belt, 6 (loaded with HPs) in my bugout bag, and 4 (loaded with FMJs) in my range bag. Took me nearly a year to accumulate (and to be honest, since I’m retired - to afford) all of these… but I feel I’m finally sufficiently prepared.

Wow hard to grasp the mindset of some posters. Call me a minimalist but I own 5 handguns. 1 revolver and 4 semiautos. For those 4 weapons I own exactly 2 mags for each. These are kept fully loaded with defensive rounds. When I use range time I take 2 or three weapons with me, unload the defensive rounds and reload with FMJ for practice. That being said I look at it as such, my role as protector of myself and family is to stop the threat or impede it enough to get my family and myself away from the threat. With the amount of ammo some are carrying it looks like they are expecting to participate in a revolution not self protection.

Well my mindset is that it’s better to have it and not need it, than it is to need it and not have it. But I also go to the range alot and right now I tend to shoot very sparingly as my ammo stocks are getting low.

@Don45 …yes we are expecting a revolution.

+1 for the ammo cans. :+1:

They’re great if you need to displace with a relative quickness, as well. I keep a decent load out in a .50 ammo can of various calibers for whatever I intended on taking with me. If/when the time comes we have to split…grab the can and go.

Yep, seems more likely every day.

I have one magazine I use only for practicing malfunctions. This magazine is set up to fail.

I have another magazine I practice slide lock reloads with and that’s it’s purpose.

I have 3 MAG-Gar magazines that I don’t ever drop and I keep my Federal HST rounds in. These are my self-defense magazines.

I am a firm believer in having a magazine loaded with your hollowpoints that you treat like gold.

Damaged Magazines can cause double feeds and they’re a pain the butt to clear.

I’m in the 3 minimum camp and my next level is 6, after that it doesn’t matter, I’ll take more. My Ruger MK-II I have 3 mags, my Dan Wesson 357 I have 6 speed loaders because it uses the same ones as my S$W Victory model. My EDC I have 12, My 1911 full size I probably have 30+ just because I could get them for free, same with the Beretta 92FS. I have no idea how many AR/AK/M1A mags I have but suffice to say it’s a bunch. Magazine springs do wear out but my great grandchildren will be long dead and buried before that happens so load them if you’ve got them.

Cheers,

I think you may misunderstand the topic. Unless I am the confused one, I believe this is about how many spare magazines you have—not how many you actually carry.

Training requires equipment and firearms are not the exception. A lot of classes will require you to have extra mags when attending.

I like a minimum of 2 spare mags per pistol (3 mags total minimum)
