How Heavy is Heavy

I got curious today so I had to check. When I picked Kimberly up she felt a bit heavy so I put her on the scale. That’s a Kimber EVO with a standard Kimber mag with 6 9MM Gold Dots in a Muddy River Tactical leather IWB holster. She weighs in, as you can see, at 25.08 Oz. a little over a pound and a half. Seems like a lot for such a small package but the scale doesn’t lie.

Anything that is not light is heavy.

Your post made me interested in the total weight of my EDC; with a full mag and holster it is 2 lb, 10 oz. Is that heavy? Compared to my other, former, EDC at 2 lb, 2 oz, yes, but with the belt I have, the weight is not noticeable. As I was transporting my second firearm to weigh it, in the holster with my hand on the grip, I became aware that I was indexing the firearm in the holster the same as I would if it were unholstered, with my finger placed where it would be high, on the slide above the trigger.

I’ve found with the correct well made equipment to carry my EDC and accessories, the weight doesn’t bother me. Depending on how I dress and what I’m doing I carry different firearms for the situation. Don’t know if it’s because I’ve been EDCing for a good time now it’s gotten to be a norm to me.

A very subjective thing. A lot depends on the waist of the person and proper belt.

For EDC, I have a Glock 26 (19,4oz empty) 10+1 double stack mag which is a bit bulky. I bought the Pistol over 10 years ago & carried it for years. I also have a Ruger LC9s (17.2oz empty) 7+1,which will fit in a pocket holster for gym shorts etc… My EDC today is a Walther CCP (20oz empty) 8+1 & only 1.18" wide. Very comfortable and around the same wieght as the Glock. I carry an extra mag. I use the Klinger Sticky holster IWB with no belt clip & it never moves. I have carried my Glock 26 with the same IWB holster and the extra weight makes no difference on holster movement. I never carry my full size pistols with the exception of an occasional 1911 which is slim enough with jacket, I have several 1911 OWB holsters which hold all but the barrel at or above the beltline. They are obviously heavier (approx. 42oz empty) than any of my full sized 9mms with the heaviest being my Ruger American 9mm at 32oz empty.

Honey, does this holster make me look fat? :sunglasses:

Mine is about 31 ounces (rough guestimate with Google) I get 18 rounds though.

Heavy is not always bad. Heavy gun is usually easier to shoot :man_shrugging:t2:. Seems like a reasonable carry weight to me for that type of weapon.

Just have to find a comfortable way to carry him!

I have never thought about this, but you made me curious now…

41 oz

Like @Alexander8 posted - proper belt can handle everything.
And it is still only 1.4% of my weight so I can definitely manage it. :slightly_smiling_face:

AR10 with bells and whistles and a mag inserted will weigh about 12lbs. This is not heavy, just need to work out more

My EDC with laser, full mag+1, and holster is 24.9oz. In appendix carry, barely noticeable.

Weight and scales were a big thing in my analysis when I got serious about EDC.

I was basically not carrying at all when my primary defensive handgun setup was over three pounds extra to shove in my pants every day. Officer model steel 1911 .45ACP with a reload, featherweight holster, and mag carrier rolls in at about 50oz for 14 rounds. It was just more than I was willing to carry on the chance I would need it in the next five minutes, when the 7,000,000 previous five minute periods in my life had not required that tool to be at hand.

But the world changes, and I decided that I really needed to be doing something if I could come up with an acceptable solution. What if it only weighed a pound? Would I carry an extra pound around all day? I went clear to the other end of the scale — not street ready, but about a pound empty.

Ok, so that’s just half the weight for 15 rounds of .380ACP. Ran with that for a while — weight not a problem; bulk not a problem. I wondered about being a bit undergunned, but not enough to go back to heavy artillery.

Skipping past the middle chapter, I eventually split the difference and am comfortable with the middle ground.

Sixteen rounds of 9mm, with the real advantages and the hypothetical disadvantage of no reload. A serviceable firearm is a lot more than just ounces, but the scale was definitely in my process at every decision point.

I enjoy the days I just carry a gun and one extra mag. :grinning:

Heavy to me only applies if you can see my pants drooping on the AIWB side, which doesn’t happen with my polymer, but has with my metal. Oh, I guess I can apply heavy to rifles. My daughter’s rifle is just under 13 lbs. It’s a good workout carrying that around.

For me jeans, a good belt and good footwear and the weight isn’t an issue. I probably carry an additional
5 lbs, but if I don’t have my edc I feel naked, and nobody wants to see me naked in a gun belt!:joy::joy::joy:
