Honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice this Memorial Day

Today is Memorial Day, a federal holiday established to honor the military personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice.

At 3:00 p.m. local time, please join us in a moment of silence to honor these brave men and women.

We will observe this moment of respect at 3pm MST.

Our newly erected flag pole and an old friend, getting into the act.

I will be visiting the New Hampshire State Veterans Cemetery today to pay my respects to my brothers and sisters who went before me. My wife has informed me that when my time comes, that is where I will be going and that I have no say in the matter. And considering the fact I will be dead, she has a point. But I have been there before and it’s where I want to be.

Netflix streaming offers an 8-episode production of “Medal of Honor.” Each episode has the story of a Medal of Honor recipient, along with reenactments, interviews with living relatives, and commentaries by officers and historians of the era. Highly recommended.

It wasn’t at 3, but, we went to a Memorial Ceremony where my grandparents are buried. Both of my grandfathers were veterans. The local American Legion came out and did a 21 gun salute, followed buy Taps played on trumpet.

I started watching them and enjoy the stories of heroism.

Glad you got a chance to see it, @Johnnyq60. I just finished the set a few minutes ago. There are at least a dozen books about these men, but watching the stories, the way they were presented, was quite an experience - very intense at times. The award itself is bigger than life. One commentator called it America’s version of knighthood.

Less than 3600 have been awarded and there are others on YouTube channel also called Medal of Honor. Check out the story of MSG Roy Benavidez

Wow. I happened to find Master Sergeant (then Staff Sergeant) Roy P. Benavidez - YouTube where President Regan tells his story and presents the award. Then Benavidez speaks at the Million Dollar Round Table and fills in some of the blanks. One of the comments below the video screen suggested that stories like this should be read by students and I whole heartedly agree. I was thinking about how many inspirational speakers I’ve listened to in my long life, and how hearing his story early on might have led me to make some better choices along the way.

He is an extraordinary man, with not a lot of formal education, from a small town in rural Texas, but with a level of courage, spirit, and determination that leaves the listener speechless.

What a wonderful person - thank you, @Johnnyq60. I hope others will follow my link to see what he has to say.

Did you ever see the ceremony in the White House when Obama presented 24 medals of honor on the same day. They were some forgotten men it’s on YouTube.

Hi @Jose_A5. That’s a tough burden to be carrying around all these years. I served and I was in Vietnam, but I was not a combat veteran. There are, however, plenty of RVN combat vets and I’ll bet there is a support group that meets in your area. An online search like

“Vietnam veteran support group near me”

might yield contact information that can help you get a lot more enjoyment out of life. You are not the only person who feels the way you do, and you don’t have to deal with this alone.
