Years ago, I was out shooting my new Ruger American .223 and yelled at the dog to go away so it wouldn’t hurt her ears.
I figured if the sound hurt her ears she would shy or run away.

She didn’t she sat and ran around the shooting bench for 30 minutes all excited.

After shooting the doggy was totally deaf. I, we, all were so so so sad and upsetā€¦ā€œwhy didn’t she just run awayā€? Dogs must not understand pain like we do when it comes to hearing.

For the next month we taught her hand signs and signalling.

We were so blessed that after about 6 months she regained about 75% of her hearing. To this day she has a little bit of trouble with it, but a valuable lesson that I tell to as many firearm owners as I can… I hope I help someone out here.

16 ga. ā€œCHAMPIONā€ made by IVER JOHNSON, ARMS and CYCLE WORKS
FITCHBURG MASS. U.S.A.
This was my Dads first gun when he was 15 (about 1953) he killed his first bear that fall with a load of buckshot. The gun works fine, I have hunted rabbits and partridge with it. I think of him every time I take it out.

Found my photo.
This firearm was from my wife’s grandfather.
It was used to get food for the family on the farm… simpler times back than.!
The etching is amazing!

Thanks for the kind words. It was the second firearm I ever owned.

Decades ago I got it as a gift from my wife’s uncle. He’s the guy that got me into this whole firearms thing. A great man!

Here’s my dogs watching over my daughter as she sleeps in our trailer during a camping trip. The one on the left is the puppy (about 5 months old here).
