Gun laws in Virginia

Has anybody heard of anything going on in Virginia with new gun laws in the past couple months

If the changes were done within couple months, you have everything updated at USCCA’s Gun Laws by State website. (Last update 07/01/2020)

Hopefully somebody type in some info here tomorrow.
I do care more about Illinois than Virginia :slightly_smiling_face:

@Richard209 You need to get plugged into VCDL. They have a mail list that will keep you up on current VA 2A events. VSSA also puts out some great info. I like Cam Edwards, a Virginian, that puts out great 2A content on yewtube and writes for BearingArms. Hope that helps…

The rumor is Governor Ralph Northam plans to hold a special session in August and revisit Delegate Mark Levine’s HB961, which banned "assault weapons,” suppressors, and magazines that hold over 10 rounds.

Besides HB961, these other infringements could also be voted on in August:

  • repeal reciprocity with 25 states
  • shutdown indoor shooting ranges
  • restrict outdoor shooting ranges
  • no open carry in vehicles
  • proof of training to purchase a firearm
  • 10% tax on guns and ammunition
  • conviction for various misdemeanors or a “hate crime” will take away gun rights
  • illegal to have guns in state or local government buildings
  • illegal to carry in Capitol Square or in the General Assembly
  • gun stores cannot employ anyone who is prohibited from owning firearms - even a janitor
  • and more

According to my anti-rights state rep, gun control, etc., will not be part of the August special session. The VCDL requested that we contact our reps about the August session. One part of our email exchange stated “The legislative agenda that has been explained to me by leadership does not include gun legislation. I have stated very clearly to the leadership that I believe gun legislation introduction to be unwise.” Time will tell.

@Richard209 Definitely follow @Jeff-A1’s advice and get on the VCDL mailing list.

AFAIK, the major changes that involve gun owners is the following:

  • Reinstate the “one handgun per month” rule (this is being challenged by the VCDL in court)
  • Universal Background Checks - Basically even private sales now require a background check (this is being challenged by VCDL in court)
  • Allow municipalities (City, County, Town) to disallow firearms in certain places like government buildings and parks. Alexandria and Newport News have already taken advantage of this. Fairfax has said they will do it also. I would imagine most of NoVA, Richmond Area, and VA Beach Area will take advantage. If you travel to any of these places this is the set of laws most likely to bite you in the arse
