A very slight bit of humor, but I am still climbing out from under my desk in the 1960’s! Never did figure out what I was going to do without a rear end. It stuck out from under the desk. Moreover, how was the desk going to protect me from the incoming nuke?
Seems to me better prepared than not. This appears to be part of the Komrade school of not allowing SRO since they “militarize” the school.
Oh, you of little faith
I do think it matters how you conduct the drills. I’ve read plenty of horror stories about teachers and students not realizing it’s a drill and texting family that they love them and what they want them to know if they don’t make it. I suspect drills can be conducted in such a way as to be useful. But it’s interesting to me.
I also think grade levels matter. Drills need to be age appropriate.
I also think we need to be fair enough to consider arguments from “the other side.” Even the crazy folks at Every Town.
That’s abuse.
I guess my take is this: there were 62 people shot at schools in 2023. Do we really need to drill 55 million kids and 6.5 million staff for something statistically less likely than getting hit by lightning?
Don’t get me wrong, school shootings are horrific. But I think there are a lot of other things we can do to work on this issue other than active shooter drills.
As usual, this is simply one man’s opinion. Take it or leave it as you see fit.
I wouldn’t know.
Likely not. And you make a legitimate point.
However, good, bad, or indifferent, we are dealing with a different group of students and parents then we were during the cold war.
Furthermore, even the devastation by earthquakes is not dramatized in the news’ cycle like school shootings are. When it comes to emotional impacts of news-worthy events, it is hard to surpass the impact on the national psyche of a school shooting.
Also, with earthquakes, we know where they typically happen with any degree of devastation. If you live in Indiana, you don’t have to worry about an earthquake like you do if you CA. School shootings aren’t like that. There’s a fear that it can happen anywhere at anytime unlike earthquakes or other natural disasters that are geographically specific or that can be predicted by weather forecasts like hurricanes.
There is something different emotionally about a school shooting compared to most other tragedies. I personally suspect that changes the emotional impact of the drill.
Again, my $0.02. And worth less than that…
And, no, I still can’t believe I am arguing for anything posted on EveryTown’s website…
I is intended to save lives. So one apologizes one one is dead they are dead. Gust my opinion.
I remember those too. We had to go out of the classroom and lineup along the cinder block wall outside our classroom, get on our knees and cover our head. The teacher told us the wall would protect us. I didn’t know much about nukes, but I heard what they did to Japan. I always thought it was the dumbest drill ever. The things we had to go through to make the adults feel better!
…and now they want us on our knees again! Marvelous!
The more things change the more they stay the same.
.gov SUCKS!
“You shouldn’t keep doing that you’ll go blind!” Oh, I kill me!
Are you referring to the old Health Dept. admonishment about
Master Baiting?
“You’ll get 'Hairy Palms too!”
I believe in keeping with the current trends
in light of DEI/ Equality is that 'Harry Palms and his five Brothers?"
or the Vulcan 'Clean and jerk?
or the ‘SHRINKAGE!’ (G. Constanza/Seinfeld
I thought Master Baiters worked on fishing boats. Wouldn’t they be controlled by the FDA.
They must have culturally appropriated (stolen) the name.
The only ‘Master Baiters’ I know are in DC and they are VERY GOOD @ Jerking us around!
