Friday Favorite: Folding Knife

Most of the time I will carry a Leatherman Skeletool CX. I’ve had it for years, love it. Very lightweight, and has the basic tools used most often (mixed blade, pliers, screwdriver, bottle opener). When I’m not carrying this I have a small collection of folders that I will rotate through.

Like my firearms, I have lots of knives. A couple of favorites for carry away from the house are the Ruger Follow Through by CRKT. These are not assisted but open as quickly as an assisted due to the super smooth ball bearing used on the pivot. I do own an assortment of assisted knives also. I keep a serrated knife in back right pocket (clipped tip up) and a plain edge in left rear pocket. I use other ‘work’ knives around the property everyday that i do not worry about beating up; again a serrated and plain edge. I have carried a knife/knives every single day of my life since I was 5 years old; i am not dressed without my knives. Yes, they get used everyday.

Jerzy, I think that’s a perfect light weight knife for everyday carry.

Yes it is.
Fits every pocket. 1.5 inch blade gives the same results in self-defense as any longer and less concealable one.

Hi I’m new here I just had a question i live in Illinois so I have a switchblade CRKT CEO and we’ll I don’t know if it’s fine to carry with a FOID card! Any suggestions

That’s my choice too, a Skeletool. Carries and deploys like a regular knife complete with 50/50 blade and pocket clip, but it has those two other things fixers are forever reaching for, screw driver and pliers. The best part is it’s thin enough it slipped right in where my knife was always kept in the first place.

I am not able to provide legal advice for any state other than Kentucky. That said, according to the reciprocity information provided by USCCA, a concealed carry license in IL only applies to handguns and not any other weapons. My understanding is that the FOID card does not allow someone to carry anything, just to own the covered weapons. A permit, along with a FOID, is required to carry a handgun.

Well that is a little ambiguous in IL.

Switchblades and other automatic knives are legal. (SB 607 would allow individuals to carry automatic knives when in possession of their Firearm Owner’s Identification Card.)

The state of Illinois only banned the possession of throwing stars, switchblades, ballistic knives, and knives that open with a press of the button.

Hi Mike,

My understanding is that a IL CC permit is a valid replacement for a IL FOID, but of course a IL FOID is not a CC permit. My Concealed Carry instructor (a LEO) encouraged us to maintain both our FOID and CCW permits because if the CCW law was repealed we would need the FOID as back up to maintain legal firearm ownership. Also with the FOID renewal delay (blamed on COVID-19) a lot of people are using their CCW permit to make purchases that a dealer wouldn’t touch with an expired FOID. So I agree with you that in IL you should have both, but a 2015 amendment may not require the FOID if you have a valid CCW.

I am posting the 2015 amendment to the IL law below, maybe I am missing something?

In due to 836, the FOID Act is amended in part as follows…

21 (c-5) The provisions of paragraphs (1) and (2) of

22 subsection (a) of this Section regarding the possession of

23 firearms and firearm ammunition do not apply to the holder of a

24 valid concealed carry license issued under the Firearm

25 Concealed Carry Act who is in physical possession of the

26 concealed carry license.

Also

9 (430 ILCS 65/3) (from Ch. 38, par. 83-3)

10 Sec. 3. (a) Except as provided in Section 3a, no person may

11 knowingly transfer, or cause to be transferred, any firearm,

12 firearm ammunition, stun gun, or taser to any person within

13 this State unless the transferee with whom he deals displays

14 either: (1) a currently valid Firearm Owner’s Identification

15 Card which has previously been issued in his or her name by the

16 Department of State Police under the provisions of this Act; or

17 (2) a currently valid license to carry a concealed firearm

18 which has previously been issued in his or her name by the

19 Department of State Police under the Firearm Concealed Carry

20 Act.

This is incorrect. You must have a valid FOID in Illinois. If your FOID expires, your CCW is not valid. Now, you don’t have to carry your FOID if you have a valid CCW from Illinois. Also, you can show your CCW license to buy ammo. But, the fact remains, in Illinois it all starts with “Must have a valid FOID card.”

With my conceal “weapon” or firearm license I can carry an auto or anything else I legally please.

Couple of Benchmades , Wilson Combat (EDC), SOG auto.
I do keep a Gerber MK I in my boot! Back in the late 70’s you could open carry those on your belt. Never was questioned, then again stationed on a boomer out of Guam.

I think this would confirm that switchblades are illegal in IL.
When I go there, I do not bring my automatic knife.

I still don’t see where a switchblade is legal with a CC permit or foid.
