3 shots at 40 yards, I imagine through a windshield. Not too bad. I’d love to know what caliber the shooter was using. I have read conflicting reports concerning windshield penetration of 9mm.

9 mm goes through it without any issue. Human body is big enough to not thinking about changed trajectory.
The thug wrongly thought it’s what’s called a drive-by.
Personally, I think 9mm works just fine to go through a windshield. However, it did make me think of a quote from a TV show that I can’t remember at the moment:
“Why did he shoot multiple times through the windshield at point blank range? Did he miss?”
“No, he’s a professional. The follow up shots were to make sure the glass didn’t mess with the trajectory of the first bullet.”
It applies only if you hit the same hole in the windshield…

There are safety glass (bullet prof ) being made for law offices in there patrol cars. All the way around glass. They will with stand a 9 mm close up 3 feet. Will not go through. and a 45 to 50 cal will take the in pack like is that all you have?
I would think the 9mm will have more advantage penetrating objects than a larger caliber, I have seen a video where the 9mm penetrant through 5 drywall partitions where the .40 caliber stops after 3 or 4.
