Which original owner?
The Russian Empire? Mexico? The Native Americans that were there when we arrived? The Native Americans that had been pushed out of California by larger waves of Native American migrations? Should we find the last person on Terra De Feugo and, considering that he has been pushed the furthest, give it all to him?
Or, should we just go back to the most recent condition, before becoming part of the US and allow it to be restored to an independent republic?
“Give it back” has never made the slightest bit of sense. It makes the assumption that, until being settled by Europeans, the Americas were in a frozen state of equilibrium.
