I have been researching belly band holsters for a while because many people earlier recommended ankle holsters to me, and I did ask about them too. But after reading more reviews, I found ankle holsters are not usually the best option for daily use, so now I am asking about belly band holsters instead. From what I found, belly band holsters seem more practical and comfortable. They wrap around the waist, so you can wear them with gym clothes, casual outfits, or clothes without a belt. That flexibility is something I personally liked.
They also help with concealment and many models come with extra pockets for small essentials. On the other hand, quality matters a lot. Some cheap ones may feel uncomfortable or lose elasticity over time. Overall, if someone wants comfort and flexibility, a belly band holster looks like a solid option. Since there are many seniors here with experience, what would you recommend for daily use?
Definitely belly belt is more convenient than ankle holster. Is it more comfortable? It depends on your body type.
Is it the best? Nope… it is just another option.
Personally I prefer and recommend hard case holster designed for your firearm securely mounted / attached to your sturdy belt.
I know you don’t want to invest money, so perhaps tell us what firearm do you want to carry, which hand is your dominant and maybe one of us has a spare holster sitting in the drawer and is willing to donate.
Really appreciate this honest feedback. You made a fair point that there is no single “best” option, it depends on body type, firearm setup, clothing style, and daily routine. i am mainly exploring something comfortable for long wear with better concealment, which is why belly band caught my attention. I am planning to carry a 9mm, so balance, comfort, and proper support matter even more.
your point about a proper hard case holster on a sturdy belt also makes sense, especially for retention and consistent draw. In your experience, for someone who spends long hours sitting, driving, and moving throughout the day while carrying a 9mm, would a quality belt-mounted hard holster still outperform a belly band in comfort and accessibility?
“If” I was to consider a belly holster for EDC, I personally would look at models that are either designed to use a Kydex holster made specifically for your firearm provided by you, or one that has a ridgid holster molded into it for your specific firearm.
I drive and sit alot also and I carry a 45acp commander in a Galco IWB @ 4oclock position no comfort issues for me. I have used this set up and drove for 8 hrs no discomfort. But what is comfortable for one may not be for someone else it really is each persons comfort.
Using a belly band with a proper Kydex holster or a molded rigid design definitely seems safer than basic elastic ones. I was looking at simple bands before, but for a 9mm this makes more sense.
Which one would you trust more for daily carry, Kydex with band or molded design? And is there a clear difference in comfort and draw speed?
that makes sense especially the comfort and sweat issue, I can see how that would become a problem in daily use. The point about faster draw with a proper belt setup is also very valid, I did not think about that angle much before. For someone carrying a 9mm daily in warm weather, would you still say belt + Kydex is the most practical long-term option compared to any belly band setup?
that is a very helpful breakdown, thanks for sharing. The points about retention, trigger coverage and consistent draw really make sense. I understand now that safety should come before comfort. If I want to balance both, would you suggest starting with a proper belt and hard shell holster first?
Yes, I definitely recommend starting with good belt and hard shell holster. Even the less expensive (Muddy River Tactical) holster is much better than nylon soft holster (these are usually a part of belly band).
I do not see any reason to use belly band if on belt carry (IWB/AIWB/OWB) can be also considered.
that makes a lot of sense, especially the point about safety and proper retention. I can see why a solid belt with a hard shell holster is a better place to start compared to softer options. I will focus on that setup first. One thing I am still curious about, in situations where a belt is not practical, like gym wear or lighter clothing, is there any scenario where a belly band is actually a reasonable choice, or would you still recommend sticking with belt-based carry only?
Got it, I understand your point and it makes sense that if there are better alternatives closer to a proper belt setup, they would be a smarter choice than a belly band. I have heard about the PHLster Enigma but not much about the others, so I will look into them as well. Between these options, which one do you think works best for long hours in terms of comfort and concealment, especially with a 9mm?
This is the moment you will have to review all 3 options by yourself, find pros and cons and decide which one fits your application.
I (and actually anybody) will not be able to tell you what is good or bad for you. Body type, belly muscle/fat, the way how you move, how you bend, what type of work you do - these are your personal factors that dictate which carry option is for you.
That is a fair point, I understand what you are saying. At the end of the day it really comes down to personal factors and real-world use. The videos you shared are actually very helpful, they give a much clearer idea of how each option performs. i will go through them properly and try to figure out what fits my setup best.
I can only comment on the Crossbreed version. It’s got a nice holster that attaches with velcro so you can adjust the cant to your liking. I was looking for something I could use when mountain biking. But I hated it. It seems top notch for a belly band setup. It checks a lot of boxes. But I couldn’t reach a point where I wasn’t printing and the band itself moves when you draw making it much more difficult to clear the holster. And that movement scratched the heck out of my side so I wasn’t going to practice my draw much with it. I abandoned belly bands altogether after that.
