I have spent good money on my handguns. I love my handgun. If I was ever in a self-defense situation and had to use it I would lose it to the police. Have you considered this?
Even our man Hickok has this to say about it.

This is why I never carried my 938 when I had it.
My mentor asked me this exact question. Do you want to loose your Kimber When you have a Springfield that is about half to cost to replace…?
It’s similar to being able to defend myself at the risk of getting fired but being able to go home to my family. I can always find another job.
Edit: it’s only a $900 VP9SK, my priciest to date.
Isn’t it a reason we pay for self defense / firearm insurance?

Good point but the LEA might make it hard to get it back.
When my EDC is confiscated, I know it’s gone forever. So instead of handgun, I’ll get check for amount equal to handgun’s value. ![]()
Carry a $200 pistol, get reimbursed for your Staccato ![]()

I’ll keep it simple from my perspective. In my home state I’m very secure in carrying my favorite gun. In travel however, where laws change, where states/cities/counties are not as “firearms” friendly or overly restrictive, I carry a very reliable but inexpensive firearm that, although compliant, if things go sideways will not bring tears to my eyes if it is, for whatever reason, lost to the circumstances. We all know that certain states have restrictions, and even if compliant, our firearms can face “temporary” consequences based on the jurisdiction and their interpretation of law. So, based on things I’ve read about such circumstances, I feel I’ve taken the necessary steps to make such an occurrence less painful. So in answer to the question, yes, I’m prepared to lose this gun. I bought it in full anticipation of such an occurrence.

I just realized I carry 19 “Hi-Point C9” handguns in my holster…

That is the reason I carry an M&P shield, to replace it won’t break the bank
My opinion: If I’m worried about a $1k difference (or $10k difference) in value between the guns lost, I have no business drawing a gun to begin with. Using lethal force is such a serious thing…I sometimes wonder if people fully comprehend how high the stakes are when drawing a gun, if they are worried about losing the gun.
This is why I carry a gun that was given to me by my brother’s friend; he rides with the Outlaws biker club. I obtained it for free, so if they take it, no big deal. ![]()
Until they check the serial numbers and it comes up stolen.
Until they check ballistics and comes back used in other shootings and or murder.
Yeah, and all you need to worry about is whatever crimes can be traced back to its serial number.
I really like my firearms. I would hate to lose them under any circumstances. Still, they are only material objects. I do have a couple of firearms a gunsmith worked over and put together for me that I have a lot of money invested in and I’m somewhat emotionally attached to them. I do carry them. I’ve already been through losing 2 firearms in my lifetime, being taken by, law enforcement, prosecutors and our legal justice system, simply because I was legally armed (I had a CCW), during an arrest for misdemeanor complaints that did not involve firearms. Being handcuffed, thrown to the ground getting my share of facial road rash, being jailed, forced to post bond even though I totally cooperated with law enforcement. the charges were dropped after a short time. One was simple trespass, the other, physical assault, defending myself physically when I was attacked.NO; don’t count on getting your gun back.
Good topic.
Although such defensive use can be rare, it can have multiple impacts on us as well. Of course, we try to prevent it. There are even instances when it was not “used”, but other circumstances occurred which led to its confiscation.
If I can borrow from a sports analogy, “having a second string back up” at home per se.
this
pretty much sums it up.
Simple answer for me is yes. The cost of my EDC has no impact on my decision to carry it. If I ever am in the position where I must draw and fire to save my life or someone else’s and it is confiscated as a result. It was money well spent as it has served its purpose.
