AR Or Shotgun for home defense

Love the picture!

Many people have military and police training, and they have the abilities to help
train us to stay away from these mistakes that can kill or worse. Many Military People and
Officers’ have died defending others and themselves in circumstances that are painful with injuries
and death.

Negligence: is big in all the accidents that happen each year. No one knows what will happen in any
DCI or even on a movie set; " RUST ". I have learned and still learning SAFETY, not seeking never to
shooting someone. Everyone is priceless and you have a purpose in life. I am on my 6th year in many areas of learning, it never runs out and plenty to work on.

And yet, CCW folks rate 85% accuracy to the police’s 15%… there us a huge disconnect between what is expect of civilians and “professionals”.

I haven’t seen 85% as an all private citizen DGU average. Where is that from?

At any rate, even 85% certainly isn’t 100%…further evidence that misses do happen

This is not the original source I got the info from… but I’ll keep looking… in the meantime… Shocking but true: Citizen concealed carry holders are BETTER trained at using guns than many cops

And I agree… 85% is too low.

Another interesting note are studies that show CCW’s are more law-abiding than police… not knocking the police, just showing that we live by a much higher standard-- out of necessity.

PERHAPS, I can get some help from other CCW holders/posters… finding the data…???

I am definitely handgun first shotgun second. I would just as soon not actually have to kill someone, the shotgun with buckshot and slugs alternating are almost certain to kill. I will if if have to but most criminals are cowards and will run when challenged. Much less drama to the family and less paperwork if you don’t kill and I hate paperwork.:thinking:

This is a good question!
I wood look at it from a sq ft point of view. For me in a flat 1000 sq ft 3 bedroom home in the subs. I choose at least a 4+1 shotgun. Now if I lived in a larger home flat or multi level I would consider the AR. If the intruder(s) is dumb enough to break-in the intruder may be dumb enough to hang around and if they have a firearm things could go south fast! More sq footage the greater number of dummies may try to enter your home so they can get the job done faster and get out.
Now that is with what the question asked, shotgun or AR. But I am sure the majority here would have a pistol in hand if a unfortunate event such as a intruder was found in one’s home but that was not part of the question.
Stay safe everyone :anchor:

Few things will make a home intruder reconsider his poor life decisions than sudden illumination of a dark hallway and the distinct popping sound made when igniting a flame thrower.

I bought a Beretta 1301 Tactical with extended mag tube for home defense. Ive had trouble finding Slugs so haven’t trained enough yet, so my rifle is still my go-to for home defense. Once I get trained up on my Beretta I will probably switch as 7 rounds of 00-Buck is hard to argue with.

Besides my pistols which I have 4 to grab from out of bed, my micro, pocket .22wmr 380, sub compact 9mm, or full size 9mm. If I hear a something suspicious, the 8.5" AR pistol with linear compensator is a quick grab and almost as quick is the VR80 9+1 with high velocity slugs…

Little further away is the pump action with 5+1 high velocity slugs…

Usually my go to is my full size 9mm and AR pistol.

Hope to change that in a couple months to a 5.7x28 AR pistol and as soon as it’s approved, supressor for that 5.7 pistol…

Why does everyone forget the ol’relyable sling shot an a driveway full of rocks

If I had to choose between the two it would be a twelve gauge pump hands down. Preferably with 00 and slug rotation in an Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 variety. The 00 and slug rotation is the way I load mine

Yes, I have a Remington 870 12 gauge also and a Honcho Legs Mare 20 gauge…

Pistols, AR’s, and Shotguns may all be used effectively and have been used effectively in home defense. The way I view it in the home, the shotgun is king. However, most have limited capacity (1, 2, 4, 5, 7 rds, although there are higher capacity guns.) I like the idea of a shotgun since the penetration is less likely to pass completely through my walls. I would stress though, it still needs to be aimed well since at most in home distances the spread of buckshot or other projectiles are minimal. Outside the home or on my property, AR is the best choice more than likely.

My choice would be the AR due to reduced recoil and light weight, both of which makes it better handling in a dynamic self defense situation.

Yes but let’s no forget the universal language of racking that slide on a 12GA pump. Makes a heck of a deterrent.

But in answer to the question is it to much to ask for both? Me Mossberg 500 backed by a SIG 9mm and the wife with an AR backed my a SW shield in 9MM.

Is the sound of wracking a shotgun all that much more intimidating than wracking a rifle? More importantly, I want a round in the chamber of whatever I am using long before an encounter is about to begin. I’m not going to approach a potential threat, or allow one to approach me, with an empty chamber so I can try intimidating them with a noise.

Ahh But I didn’t say that the other 3 weren’t cocked locked and ready to rock

Besides the dogs let me know anyone is around before they even get to the gate.

Does that mean the plan is to rack the shotgun and if they keep shooting at you anyway, drop the shotgun and pick up a different firearm to actually use?

In apartments AR for me, with only a few angles around where I feel 100% confident projectiles will not hit anything or anyone outside.
