18 Year olds - Open Carry

Made it through the House, now let’s see what the Senate has to say. Personally I’m for it, things change legally on one 18th birthday they should get all of the freedoms along with the liabilities.

Yes. We should do that.

You know it used to be that way, right?

I know guys in their 50s that shouldnt be around guns. We all know the type.

If your old enough to die for your country you should be able to exercise your rights.

You screw up, you pay the piper.

I agree there is a vast difference between mental and chronological age …

Firearms are the leading cause of death for young people ages 18 to 20, and the firearm suicide rate among this group has increased 41% in the last decade. Eighteen to 20-year-olds commit gun homicides at triple the rate of adults 21 years and older.

I still don’t think you should punish everyone for the behavior of a few …
Like most things, I feel it has to do with education …

I would have had ZERO issues with my son and daughter carrying firearms at 18. I must be lucky, the 18 year old I meet are good men and women, then again they are mostly military so there is that.

18 year olds in the military are trained in use of firearms, so 18 year olds not in the military should also take training courses in use of firearms so their brains can further develop for the proper purpose of owning/using firearms safely.

Consider the source. The last decade has been the most psychologically phucked up time in our lives. This was never really heard of in the 70’s / 80’s. The 90’s ushered in stupid! These kids need a slap on the back of the head, not an iPhone! My cat is more disciplined than this whole generation!

Firearms are the leading cause of death for those 18–20 years old??? Would that still be true if we eliminated Chicago, Los Angeles, and other cities where deaths are caused by drug driven gangs? If drugs were eliminated from the equation would suicide or gun deaths be increasing? Or is social media responsible? All I know is when I was growing up, guns were plentiful and I never knew or heard of any of my classmates in High School or College committing suicide or being killed by firearms. It’s not the gun, it’s the decay of today’s society. But I will say it was interesting that when I was growing up we lived a mile from a bridge whose nickname was “suicide bridge”. Years later they spent thousands to put up a fence to keep people from jumping. People weren’t shooting themselves, they were instead littering the park below the bridge and putting innocent people in danger from “falling objects”.

I HATE statistics because it seems alarming (on purpose) when you say suicide rate in X group is growing by xx%. All becomes clear when you deal in REAL numbers.

In 2021 (latest statistics) there were 6,528 deaths by suicide in the 15-24 age group.

1- You know what age groups had more suicides than 15-24 year olds? All of them…

2- You know what 6,528 deaths in the USA with a population of 335,000,000 people is? Statistically insignificant….

This is true. Unless it is your kid or someone you know …
To put this in another light … How many of you here were all up in arms. About the way we pulled out of Afghanistan . 13 U.S. servicemen were killed … We have 2,079,142 military personal … 13 is statistically insignificant… Plus they signed up for it …

That old man did not put his foot down and show strength, he let those 13 die!

Oh I by no means think it was handled right… Just like not letting 18 year olds carry … My kids grew up on gun safety. I have no problem with them carrying at that age …
People here are questioning why … I provided one possible answer to the question…
Somehow it gets turned into, This is what I endorse. Even if I say I do not… So I stopped trying .

That is why, I added at the end they signed up for it … When you sign. You know you are putting you life in harm’s way … This does not justify their sacrifice by any means…
What I was conveying is the numbers matter when it is only socially relevant to you…

@BeanCounter Incorrect. It was about numbers. Only reason you care about the difference is those numbers matter to you… I purposely put a face to those numbers to make you think …
