Where and when did you get bitten by the 1911 bug?

1985 U.S. Navy. Have been addicted to them ever since. I bought my first one on my 21st birthday and 30 days later took a hacksaw to it to install a beaver tail  . Word got around at the little gun shop I inhabited that I did good work and the next thing I knew I was doing mods and upgrades for other people. You want this done? Pay for the parts and this tool I need and we’ll call it even. After about a year I built my first one from the frame up. Started doing “builds” for people and word got around. A friend from the ATF stopped by my house to offer me a bit of advice. Even though I wasn’t buying the parts, putting them together for other folks MIGHT be considered manufacturing. Even at that young age I recognized the man was trying to tell me something. So I pretty much stopped and got into National Match Rifle and got on the Navy Rifle Team.

20+ years later I’m at it again, but for me this time. Oh the first one I cut up is still my EDC today.

Cheers,
