What would you do? Sidewalk rage

It sounds like the guy getting attacked said “I apologize” as the other guy approached. So while from a legal standpoint he was likely the ”victim” of this attack it is hard to say what actions led to this confrontation and whether or not he deserved to get his butt kicked.

The intensity level of the attack aside from maybe the initial takedown also didn’t seem that high on the scale to me. Looked like the attacker was trying to get control and get his point across as apposed to trying to do any serious damage.

These guys could have been friends or family with a temporary disagreement. Someone jumping in the middle might just end up focusing both their anger on the intervener and escalate the situation even more. Or maybe the “victim” just catcalled the other guys 9 year old daughter? Either way not something I want to get in the middle of.

Without context given in the video I’m wondering what the heck was going on

Me too. It makes you the victim, and not MY family or me You go get you sum this is the problem, inability to react to inhumane behavior. Sorry, not really.

If you listen to the conversation the attackers told him to not talk to him like that! This is repeated and I am sure the attacked was warned prior to the attack to watch his mouth. From just that the person that was attacked was a instigator in this matter. Being an instigator, he makes void the ability to use deadly force.

If I lived by that the homeless guys around here would be in trouble all of the time. Threatening to kill or rape is really really common when we refuse to give them dope money.

When the instigator said “I apologize” I think he could be considered to be giving himself up under many State laws. That would end the right to use force against him even if he started the conflict. Also I think the level of instigation would come into play. Telling someone they are ugly does not give the ugly person the right to beat the crap out of you. Think your words would need to indicate you intended to use some form of force against someone before that someone could use force to defend themselves.

The attackers lawyer could argue that his client was involved in mutual combat instigated by the victim. If the instigator/victim decided to fight back and landed a serious blow he could argue he had given himself up but the attacker kept assaulting him so he had no choice but to defend himself. A messy situation I would have no interest in getting in the middle of.

That guy never would have had the drop in me. Hes twice my size-so i wouldnt mouth off to him. But if someone that much bigger than me places their hands on me, they will quickly learn why i carry, and it eill be a hard lesson for them.

Yell “Kiss and make up!” to shock them both!

When they look at you, ask “Am I misunderstanding the situation or do I need to call the police?”

While you have their attention, say, “At least shake hands so I know I don’t have to call the police.”

Unless they are total idiots, that should end it.

To play it safe, I would dial 911 before saying anything and let the operator hear it all. Then you’d have the police attention about an active situation if they are both bad guys who decide to turn on you.

Question: do you practice with the target six inches in front of you, drawing from the hip and pointing? Because that is what you need to do.

Yea, I forget what they call it, where you draw, keep the elbow low, arm goes to 90 degrees and shot from the hip. Kinda like the old west draw. We practice that one a bit. That does however come with great risk, at as you say 6 inches, your drug induced mentally ill attacker may be reaching for your gun, not a situation I choose to be in.

Close Retention seems an accurate description from my training.

I was taught to brace my hand and the butt of the pistol at an angle against my body when shooting at someone already within arms reach. Was also taught to aim for the pelvis since pointing the pistol up towards center mass increases the chances even more that the barrel gets directed towards my own body in the struggle. C.A.R techniques for shooting from a significantly bladed stance with the pistol in a higher position would also work if you have the time to draw and get into that position.

But with my more recent martial arts training I would more likely try to use strikes and other moves to gain enough time and space to either escape or draw. That lets me use both my hands against the threat instead of giving the attacker a 2 to one advantage while I am trying to get to my pistol.

Exactly. A little Close Quarter Combat experience might just save your and maybe his life.

Getting some hand to hand skills was about the only good thing to come out of my extended hospital stay. I always knew I needed to add those skills to my armed self defense abilities but had never gotten around to it until I needed to get myself back in shape from that brush with death.

There are some self defense problems that can only be solved with a firearm but there are a lot of other situations were other tools would work much better. In a situation like the one between these two guys deescalation and/or hand to hand skills give a lot more options than only having a firearm would.

Were you sparring with the nurse?

Mostly with all the unruly patients that the nurses couldn’t handle;)

Actually after 17 total days in the hospital I had lost so much muscle that I couldn’t even make it to the bathroom without a walker. After my 1 month of cardio therapy ended I needed some form of exercise to regain the rest of the lost muscle. Since I’m not a big fan of exercising I chose to take Krav Maga lessons with a coach who also did weight training. Really helped me get my strength and coordination back with the side benefit of teaching me some useful self defense skills which I am continuing to work on.
