What would you do: Grocery Store Shooter and Other Concealed Carriers

This sounds like a good discussion to have around the campfire.

I wonder if there is a way to combine all the threads like this into a single Heading:

How far away is he and how is he holding the gun?

If it is at the low ready, chances are he’s not the shooter. I’m not drawing until i have identified a threat as i don’t want to get mistaken for the shooter. If not, how close is he? If within arms reach, try to push the gun out of line with your support hand by grabbing the wrist and step inside his reach so I will be harder to shoot. If he’s further away, move laterally so he has to shift his aim and hopefully, he’ll realize I’m not the shooter and lowers his gun.

I think in this scenario. There is no time to weigh options. It may come down to a mental flip of the coin. This is something a LEO can face to

This is the one event we all need to talk about.

My HH6 when we go shopping always consider this very scenario. One shops the other watches. All we think by doing this is increasing our reaction time. We know where all the ways out are. always have an escape plan

^^^ Great point, @Jerzees. Practice avoiding and escaping.

While I agree they might be useless to 99% of the population, the 1% that encounters a bad situation after playing the what-if/what would you do scenarios will have a much better chance of surviving a bad situation.

The big flaw I see with the scenario is that we’re dropped in the middle of it without any of the knowledge we would have gathered walking through the store. Did anyone seem off? Where in the store are we? Is there an exit nearby? Who else is in the same aisle with us?

Will there be one right answer to the scenario @Richard298 posted? No. Will there be thousands of right answers - yes. Will there be one wrong answer? No. Will there be thousands of wrong answers? Yes. Because every situation will be different. Think through a variety of variations.

The what would you do scenarios should lead you to ask questions about how you would handle the situation in your specific location (i.e. your local grocery store), what other alternatives might you have to get out of the situation avoiding the use of your firearm, and at what point do you have no choice but to use your firearm.

I’ve changed the title of this thread to be less ambiguous for purposes of searching/finding the topic.

Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor. For if either of them falls, the one will lift up his companion. But woe to the one who falls when there is not another to lift him up. Two are better than one, Because they have a good reward for their labor.

You have answered your own question. If you had determined that he is “innocent”, you had better hope he is well trained and does not shoot you!

No one truly knows until they have to make that split second decision.

Police train on shoot/no-shoot scenarios all the time. Lessons come from failure. I don’t think we can get the same result from text. But if someone wanted to set up this training, it would be a good scenario.

Did I hear rifle or pistol shots?

2 shots and then nothing or repeating shots?

Doubt a fellow concealed carrier would be casually walking around after shots being fired, especially with the back being turned to where the shots were coming from.

Too many variables to try and predict a future issue…

Very difficult situation. I would hope that our training (CCW permit) would help to keep us from shooting each other.

First off, unless you’ve actually been in a gunfight you’re gonna freeze up. But to somewhat answer the question, in a split second you need to know if you’re in a “stand your ground” state, then your ass should’ve trained for this situation…hand on weapon but not drawn. Body language of the person turning the corner armed should tell you if he’s a threat or not. That’s where awareness comes in. Only problem is that no matter what state you’re in, stand your ground or not, you can’t go hunting down a shooter. Unfortunately, but that’s how it is. They have more rights than we do

The Pop Pop, Would have me searching for an escape route. While covering the 6. But that is the perfect world. And we all know there is no such thing. My HH6 and I have made it a point to be very familiar with the places we shop at.
