What do these mean?

Greetings!

I was looking at some of my ammo boxes, and some of them have data that I do not understand. Velocity and energy are self-explanitory, but what do these numbers in the zero column mean? What do I do with them?

That is how high/low the bullet will impact from the test gun or barrel, at a given distance, whether zero’d at 100 or zero’d at 200 (columns)

So like if it’s zero’d at 100 yards it will hit 1.5" low at 0 yards (that part doesn’t change with zero distance, muzzle offset is what it is)

If it’s zero’d at 200 yards it hits 1.5" low at 0 and 1.6" high at 100, etc.

If I’m right, it looks like bullet drop for .223.

Yes that’s definitely a .223/5.56 family ammo, likely out of an AR type rifle with the 1.5" height over bore

Yes, it’s a .223 Varmigeddon round from Nossler, for my AR. I got some more ammo in and was organizing it. Got to looking at some of the data on the boxes and realized I didn’t know what all of it meant. Thank you for enlightening me.

Valuable information if you don’t have a ballistics chart or chronograph.
@Craig6 >> I think Mr. Craig could explain it. Some reloading manuals have this information in them, listed in detail with bullet weight, diameter, velocity and bullet design that effects bullet drop. Each individual bullet has a coefficients rating that affects bullet drag and (drop )

It makes more sense when you view it as a graphic.

Note that it changes from rifle to rifle based on barrel length, barrel construction, rifling, weather, etc.

@LordDeinonychus

@Nathan57 & @Blacky pretty much nailed it. It’s a generic drop chart from a generic rifle that will get you close based on NORMAL velocity, atmospherics, barrel length, sight over bore etc, etc, In other words it won’t MATCH your gun but it will probably get you on paper at 200 yards. On my generic AR platforms I tend to sight in at 37 yards which generally gets me POA / POI at 200 using M193 (55gr FMJ Military) slightly different for M855 (62gr green tip military) but close enough for zombies out to 225 or so. Precision guns require precision zeros and precision ammo. Don’t confuse the two.

Cheers,

Craig6

This would be something I would have with my dope card for long range. :us:

Oh yeah this one also :us:

I’m not sure but it looks like how many seconds it takes to go 100 or 200 yards.

caliber makes a difference…

IIRC with the 7.62-308 the basic sight in was for 300 yards…

so it should print 2 inch’s high at 100 yards???

the 5.56 uses a different setup IIRC…

hmmm got me wondering about 6.5 grendel and 300 blackout… 7.62 x 39???

closer sight in probably???

then there is the 450… hmmm… guess ya got to shoot em and figure for yourself?

or maybe youtube rumble or some such it???

You can get a good starting point from one of many ballistic calculators available online or via apps. Just search your chosen place for a ballistics calculator or trajectory calculator

HUH? not sure about that??? all I did in this thread was post a sorta question…

and pretty sure most if not all are aware caliber and bullet weight does create differences so???

answers came in… so???

you can do what you want of course… but… not sure I deserve any credit whatsoever???

Thats cool , usually any info I pick up is just for my personal use. When I said credit just means where I got it from wrote in my note book
