I will be visiting for a day or 2 and/or driving through a couple of red states that do not recognize my states CCP. What should I do with my weapon with 3 mags to be legal?
What do I need to do with my weapon & ammo to visit or drive through a Red (non)Reciprocating State?
Call USCCA, join, and they will tell you legally what to do.
All states differ at least to some degree, there is no blanket template. If you can get on the USCCA Reciprocity webpage, look up that particular state that you are concerned about, it should tell that you need to know. Or, check with a search engine like Google, or Bing, or their AI search feature like Bing’s Copilot is all inclusive.
Also, fewer states honor constitutional Permitless carry. More states honor other states’ permits.
Example Tennessee: last that checked and knew:
TN honors 48 other states permits.
TN’s permit is honored by 37 states
TN is also a Permitless “constitutional carry” state and its citizens who are not prohibited persons can carry on over two-dozen other states. But, you must o bay the law of each state the you visit or travel through. Some states restrict different types of ammunition, or the maximum capacity might be restricted to ten or fewer rounds.
States like NY are among the most restrictive including with one of their NYPL pistol licenses is what they call their CCW permits, most are highly restricted and not true CCWs, like on premises only at your home or business, and not elsewhere.
If transporting your gun in your car it must be inaccessible to the passenger compartment,!locked away in your trunk. If traveling through NY likewise, and you may not stop over at a hotel, if you do you are subject to arrest. So, make the effort to look up each state that you will enter, to by sure of their specific compliance requirements.
Welcome Gary. I hope you meant blue vs red states. But to your question, if they don’t recognize you CCW then you best look up that States regulations on transport of weapons. You cannot carry, and in many situations you must have two means of locking your firearm and ammunition. You can generally check their requirements on line. In my opinion I’ll throw out my standard. I have 2 lock boxes that are California compliant. If it meets CA you’re probably good, but check. One for the firearm and one for ammo. They must be out of your reach. I’ll also make one more recommendation. If the gun and or magazine is not allowed, rethink bringing that weapon.
Welcome Gary528.
There may be a way to read up on (online) those states’ laws before you head out.
Each state might have diferrent laws, including on maximum “capacity”.
I’m not saying I agree with each specific law, I just wanna stay out of legal trouble while I advocate for more freedoms and reciprocity. “Err on the side of legal caution”?
There are a few good sources, such as the USCCA website, but you can download their phone ap too.

Which state are you in? Which states you visiting?
Some states might allow you carry but only in your vehicle where another more strict might you require you lock box it up in your car, unloaded and not within arm’s reach.
Safe travels friend.
Each territory is different. For example, NY does not allow you to stop within their state beyond having to get gas, and even then you’re pushing your luck. The District of Columbia (Washington DC) can arrest you if you have ammo that doesn’t belong to a firearm you have registered within the district. Check with the specific states you are traveling through. The federal law will allow you to pass through the states, however if you stop for a layover or meal, you may be putting yourself in danger of violating local laws.
@Gary528 Welcome to the community, and you’ve already gotten great responses. Check on the state’s laws for transporting of firearms (prefer “firearm” than weapon ), stay legal, stay safe, and safe travels!
I have to be short, sweet and to the point!
Leave the weapons and ammo at home in your safe! One or two days how much trouble can you get into, you don’t have to answer that!
Make your drive safe, keep your visit pleasant, come home!
I’m having the same dilemma. Except I’m flying to the Communist state of Somaliasota! Now that’s a place I should be armed, with an M-249!
Because we have a long drive after flight we are arming up with as many edged weapons as we can, there’s seven of us. Three guys four ladies six shemaghs, a Palestinian flag in my back pocket and a Black Lives Matter t-shirt under my clothes! It’s the only state that has a public “call to prayer” five times a day! In addition Tampons in boys bathrooms! Need I say more!
We’ll be shipping all the knives and machetes home after the wedding!
Some Red states won’t even recognize or respect you as a citizen of the United States.
Unfortunately, we all know sh1t happens and never on your schedule!
Be safe!
In addition to doing all the aforementioned homework from my colleagues, I would also look into all the cases where someone was caught and the consequences. Some legit some not so legit! You don’t want to become one on the not so legit! Just my personal opinion!
You can study till the cows come home, but one bad cop and your life is changed forever!
Relocate the wedding to a friendly state.
In Illinois you can go to isp,gov and view state laws regarding firearms and travel. This is the state police website. This is straight from the horse’s mouth.
I would imagine that every state will have the same information available for your perusal.
Check the USCCA guidance, and for each state, call the office of the Attorney General.
Welcome Gary528 to the forum. We’re glad you found us.
What state are you in, states driving through, state going to? If you are going from a red state, through red states, to a red state, you could be good with taking you EDC as long as you comply with local laws for each state. Call them and find out.
Welcome, those are good questions, good luck on your travels.
