What are your thoughts on S&W SD 40?

Why 40? go 9 or .45, depending on which cult you like best. I like 9. 9 sells the most too…so I’m not alone.

.40 is like a short bed pickup truck, or a Subaru Baja. Looks like it’ll be great at everything, but…

one of the few guns I have ever sold but don’t go off of what we say train with it and make up your own mind.

Smith and Wesson makes good products. This line of pistols actually had S&W in a lawsuit with Glock over a patent. That means the gun is basically a Glock copy which means it should be reliable.

I’m not a fan of .40. I played around with .40 and 45 and I’m a 9mm guy. That being said, .40 from that size gun will be manageable.

If you already have the gun, you have a decent firearm. Go train with it. Maybe down the line you’ll want something different. A lot of us have multiple guns, some we grew out of, or new stuff came out and we upgraded. If you haven’t bought the gun, I’d look into 9mm, and also consider the APX or Rugar RXM.

Id personally prefer the M&P line, BUT You should be gtg with that gun. I like anything S&W over many of the other cheaper options like Taurus.

only real complaint I’ve heard of with the SD series is the trigger, but I think they improved it a lot over the years. Sounds like a good Self Defense trigger.

@Deleon1996 . Welcome to the fold

Can’t speak of the .40…I have the 1st gen 9mm. Rock solid no issues sure what so ever. Holsters and sights for the M&P work on the SD. Only downside not a lot of aftermarket options

I like the .40. Can’t comment on the gun mentioned but no flies on the .40 caliber.

NOTE: Among others, you need the counsel of Jerzee and Karacal.

Although, like me, you may be sleeping in the garage!

Hopefully your SD40 is gen2… Otherwise I would say… “I’m very sorry” :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

And, please follow @Karacal advice.

I have carried the 40 caliber for many many years as a law-enforcement officer. I can truly say that it is an effective round. And some smaller guns it could be a little snappy, but I always found it to be accurate and reliable. I have carried the 40 caliber in a Smith & Wesson M&P and a Glock model 22 and model 23. I will stand behind a 40 caliber for a defensive round any day. But let’s face it no caliber will be effective without training, training, training. The old-fashioned saying still rings true, I rather hit my target with a 380 then miss him with a 45.
Stay safe and train

You can cause just as much damage with a .38 or 9mm. A .40 or .45 is really good.

.9mm is way cheaper.
