Hello everyone, my name is Tim. Born and raised in South Central Michigan. I love anything and everything about firearms (owner of many). I would love to be a USCCA instructor one day. I absolutely love sending rounds down range and camping/fishing. My current carry is a XD-MOD 3 with X2 additional mags and a Leatherman Signal.

Love being a part of the USCCA family

Um. Well. I somehow never introduced myself apparently two or more years ago. So. I have been shooting since 2012. Hated guns most of my life. Decided in 2012 to face my fears of guns and learn how to shoot. No one in our family was into guns. Became an NRA Certified Pistol Instructor in 2019. USCCA instructor since 2024. FASTER Saves Lives trained in 2022, with refresher courses since. Married … a long time. One son is a Marine vet, other son a Navy vet. I am also an elementary school teacher (Catholic school) & I lead a double life: My school family (most coworkers, all students & their parents) have NO idea I am a firearms instructor. There you go.

I am Ron Smits, a US Navy veteran, and live in Kentucky. I have a question as to how to respond to a LEO if asked if I have a weapon in my vehicle. I assume that because I have a concealed carry permit, that info is readily available to them. I also travel between multiple states on a regular basis and am not sure how much information to provide or how to legally respond to this inquiry while preserving my legal rights.

This varies state to state…you either have a duty to inform, or you do not, depending on state law. First get to know your applicable law (s). There is a lot of online advice about what you should say, and a whole lot more about what not to say. I recommend finding a close-by USCCA lawyer and and get their legal advice. There is a very real chance you could be giving up some of your constitutional rights by being overly cooperative. My state has a duty to inform, and my CCP permitis tied to my vehicle license. I have a prepared statement that I will read verbatim in the event of an interaction with law enforcement…just the statement - and nothing more - until my lawyer is present.

I’m certainly not a lawyer or an expert but this is what I’ve been working on. I think Masad Ayoob? :man_shrugging:

Greet officer and then:

“I am required to inform you that I am a concealed carry permit holder and I am currently armed. How would you like me to proceed?”

Practice it. Say it in your car. Say it until it comes naturally.

Around here I have no duty to inform BUT I do have an obligation to NOT LIE to the cops. So, legal or not, if they ask I’ll tell the truth. Something like this… :backhand_index_pointing_down:
