I am just now hearing about and incident that happened in Post Falls, ID in November 2024. From what I have been told he was denied on his claim from USCCA.

From reading the article I do not see where this was a self defense case.
He was working church security, a thug basically fell off his skateboard and the police charged him with Battery.
No weapons were involved on either side and neither had to defend themselves.
There was no threat to his life.
I do not see why USCCA would get involved.

Yup, he clotheslined the skateboarder as the kid went by. No self defense situation at all.
The requirements for a claim of self defense has to start with a situation of facing an imminent threat of harm. To justify use of deadly force by the defender, that imminent threat must be for death or serious injury.
A skateboarder riding by who has made no indication of intent to attack or harm anyone nearby certainly does not constitute an imminent threat of harm to anyone.
To confirm, here is the paragraph at the bottom of page 4 of the insurance company letter.

I agree that this does not warrant coverage under the terms of the insurance contract. I don’t agree that he should have been charged. To me, it’s one of those cases where some jacka$$ can’t follow instructions and when forcibly being stopped, cries about it. It’s a no win for the security personnel in this case. Do something and be criticized or charged, as in this case. Do nothing, and God forbid the individual had ill intent and caused injury to someone, be criticized for not stepping in. Thankless job!

Self-defense 101

Looks like I will be shopping for a new company. It’s a shame I have been with USCCA for over 13 years.

Should not the Church or Christian Warrior Training be providing his legal defense? The guy got paid to do this

@Del PLEASE read the full thread here. The evidence is clear that the church security guards actions were in no way self defense or defense of others, and would never be covered by USCCA or any other of the competitor “self defense insurance” organizations. There may be other reasons to move from USCCA, but this incident is definitely not one of them.

The Christian Warrior Training site really needs to consult an attorney or an insurance agent to learn how their report calling out USCCA as failing a member is totally out of line, based on a complete misunderstanding of both self defense law and insurance policies.
Oh, and the person who wrote that five page response from Universal Insurance needs to go to writing class. While accurate, it is an abomination of an attempt to communicate.

The gentleman you refer to was a cop for 30 years. Seems to me this Insurance company was looking for a way to get out of paying. I have until July to figure out what I am going to do. Trust me it will not be AOR…

Read the policy, it does not cover occupational use. The individual was acting in his role of security which is specifically excluded within the Policy. The Church or the Christian Warrior Church Security should be providing him with his defense.

I would have called the cops than “take care” of the perceived threat.
The problem with having a security team is calling 911 or non-emergency number becomes second or third option.

Thank him for his service but it’s irrelevant.

Last time I checked a Dictionary Volenteer meant uncompensated or not paid…

Craig_AR My point is that I do not want to spent 700 /per year to be told when I need it too bad not in our policy!

Seems lots of folks are missing details in their assessment of this situation. Was he getting paid or was he a volunteer? Was he protecting those high school kids or just property? What were the words and other actions of the skateboarder? Why did USCCA change their minds and decide to offer him legal protection? Lets remember to not be quick to make snap judgements before all of the facts come out.

Do you believe the person you posted about acted in lawful self defense?

Did you watch the video?

Can you articulate how and why that, in your opinion, was lawful self defense?

According to the letter from the insurance he was a volunteer. He was as I understand protecting kids at a church function. this skateboarder was not following commands from other security staff to stop. Not sure if you watched the video but this happened in mid November and it is now the end of February. Christian Warrior tried to contact USCCA several times and accourding to him seemed to get several stories . It just seems to me to be a big mess. I have stuck with USCCA for over 13 years and have defended the organization in many arguments online. I am paying 700 per year for this protection/training for my wife and myself. I was hoping when I posted this I would get somekind of official answer not a bunch of armchair lawyers telling me what self defense is or is not.
