To all you non-pilots... did you know about windsocks?

I never knew this, and my brother has been a pilot most of his life. Wind socks are calibrated, based on entry diameter.

Entry diameter is constant. What changes is the shape. Juss’ sayin’

In general, the width of the orange and white parts get larger as diameter increases. The orange and white part widths are calibrated to indicate wind speed.

I used to know a similar wind speed indicator for the way a flag waved in the wind. I forgot that one

Well, if you’re going to put it that way  :slightly_smiling_face:

I get it.

Simple method I’ve learned, angle of a flag divided by 4 = mph.

What if the wind is >45 mph?

Hollywood told me I don’t need to know about no windsocks as long as I can follow instructions from the tower.
