Yes this is happening. But there is a Constitutional way to try to stop government overreach. And that is with an ARTICLE V CONVENTION OF STATES. And in order to call one there have to be 34 states to pass legislation calling for one. And any AMENDMENTS PASSED BY A CONVENTION OF STATES CONGRSS CANNOT AVOID AS LAW. And that is because 3/4 of the states ratified then in the convention. And per the CONSTITUTION 3/4 OF STATES HAVE TO RATIY ANY AMENDMENT FOR IT TO BECOME LAW. So far 19 states have passed the resolutions calling for a CONVENTION OF STATES. So now only another 15 states have to pass a resolution for one to be called. Here is their web sight for you to check out to find out more about CONVENTION OF STATES. And please sign their petition if you go. And if you want you can even become a volunteer like I did as well. I have been reading Edward Watt’s book, Mortal Republic: How Rome Fell into Tyranny (2018). It’s a political history of how Rome went from a republic that persisted for several hundred years into a tyranny of dictators and emperors. There are lots of lessons for our times. The gist of the book is that the Roman republic was sucessful because it had institutions that incentivized compromise and collaboration for the benefit of the state and valued individuals’ contributions to the Roman state. All positions of authority in the Roman republic were jointly held (e.g., 2 counsels, who had to agree to move anything forward), and strict term limits for all offices. It all started to fall apart in around 133 BC when individuals broke these norms of collaboration and started relying on violence from their supporters to gain and retain power.
A constitutional convention scares the you know what out of me. If I were sure that things wouldn’t go awry, I would be in favor of it but with the demon krauts controlling so many large cities, even in red states, I recall my Grandmother’s admonition, “Be careful what you wish for. You might get it.”
If voters had to actually show up at a polling place to vote and had to physically mark a ballot, I would feel safer but with mail in ballots and votes counted by computer, I doubt the validity of any election. And signatures on ballots! Oh, yeah, we have overworked election workers under pressure to get the votes counted. How closely do you think they scrutinize the signatures on the ballots. Want a sure way to verify? Thumbprints on the ballot - both of them. Back in the early days of my residence, you had to sign the register in front of the election clerk who then compared it to the signature on record. At least it was a more detailed examination than what happens now. Sure it made voting a little more burdensome. But if you can’t take a half hour to vote for who is going to control your life for the next x number of years, you deserve what you get.
yep I have to explain and show proof of I am who I say I am. due to an auto accident 20 yrs ago. my left shoulder is permanently dislocated, and I am a lefty. so if I sign my name 5 times, I’ll get 5 different versions of it.
their answer to it is I should turn in paperwork to make an X be my signature
What new Constitutional Amendments do we need to solve our current issues? The problem as I see it is that the current Amendments are being blatantly ignored by government officials without any consequences for their violations. What good are more Amendments to the bill of rights if they can just be as easily ignored as the current ones?
In the early days of the Roman republic, there were 36 tribes (only 4 of which were in Rome) and elections and laws were determined by the votes of the tribes. People cast votes as part of their tribe and had to travel to Rome to cast their vote in person by publicly announcing who they were voting for or against (no secret ballots). Then, when the majority in each tribe was determined, that tribe was entitled to cast a single vote for a candidate or law.
Secret ballots did not become a thing until the 100s BC when the republic began its decent into violence, dictatorship and corruption.
CHARLES514 I know a lot of people are afraid of a RUN AWAY CONVENTION OF STATES. but it will not happen. And that is because the people that are sent to it to do what the state wants have to do what the state tells them to vote for or not for. And if they DO NOT DO WHAT THEIR STATE TELLS THEM TO DO. THE STATE WOULD CALL THEM BACK AND SEND NOW PEOPLE THAT WILL DO WHAT THEY ARE TOLD TO DO. To find out more about how a CONVENTION OF STATES WORK AND IS RUN HERE IS THEIR WEB SIGHT THAT EXPLAINS IT ALL OUT. It also shows what they are planning on working on as well. You can also sign their petition and if you want you can sign up to volunteer for them as well. I’m a volunteer for them too. COSAction
From what I know Convention of States is looking to pass TERM LIMITS, BALANCED BUDGET, AND FICAL SPENDING, AND A FEW OTHERS THAT THEY ARE STILL WORKING ON. That I know of.
I like the idea behind term limits but I’m not sure it makes much of a difference when the two party system has a long list of kleptocrats in training all ready for their shot at a piece of the pie.
I also think with interest payments on our $32.9 trillion and rapidly climbing debt about to rapidly surpass $1 trillion a year that the balanced budget ship sailed a decade or two ago. The only way to balance the budget now would likely be to ditch or at least significantly cut Social Security and Medicare, watch our infrastructure continue to crumble into the ground, and cut our military spending by probably at least 30%. And/or (most likely and) significantly raise taxes.
Don’t think there are any politicians willing to go against the military industrial complex or all the voters relying on SS and Medicare to try and keep their heads above water with out of control cost of living and medical bill increases. Not to mention our poorly maintained and rapidly failing infrastructure is only going to lead to even higher repair costs and lower tax revenues down the road. Then add in the massive discontent of voters being told that the party is over and the unimaginably large bill is now due.
Maybe an Amendment making corruption punishable as an act of treason and incentivizing whistle blowers to out the corrupt acts would help? But your not going to find anyone in power pushing for an Amendment like that anytime soon.
