It’s a good drill and it’s part of the instructor training. It’s very easy to simply go through the motions and not really use your eyes and brain.
Beth and Mark were very good about making us actually look for something to identify during our S/A and they quizzed us on what we each saw.

Great drill… never did it on range 
However it’s a part of my dry firing… I always scan my stairs to check if my wife wants to watch TV in basement 
… but to be serious, I always scan left, right after taking shots.
