So, You Check Into Your Hotel, and it Is NOT Gun Friendly?

I travel by vehicle all over the fly over states as part of my employment. A normal week will include 3 overnight hotel stays in various states & cities. As an elite member for one of the worldwide chains I really don’t care about a particular hotel properties firearm rules and have never had any problems in the last week years. Granted, I CCW when I check in but I also have an AR pistol in my suitcase. I have never been refused check in or made to leave a property due to my firearms. I have been refused check in because of my refusal to wear a mask at Comfort Inn in Madison, WI. A simple call to Customer Relations next morning resolved the problem with 18,000 points credited back and a free room night.

@Zee - This is in fact true. And, The reason the verbiage “carrying a handgun is prohibited” is in quotes in the statute is because the sign MUST say those exact words or else it is not a valid prohibition.

Every hotel that I have checked in I don’t tell them anything because it’s none of their damn business and plus they have a safe in the hotel

I have learned a lesson of late that I will pass on unsolicited, and because it is unsolicited it is worth what you paid for it. Do not tell people what you would do in these situations. People that feel like most people that have decided to carry legally for self protection will do what they have to do based on the situation. I check into a hotel or motel room to sleep while on a trip. I check in maybe have dinner, go to bed, maybe have breakfast and leave. In over ten years not one of my rooms have been searched nor do I expect one to be. In that same time not one clerk, housekeeping or server has had any idea if I do or don’t have a weapon. They will not know in the future either and I don’t believe we should share the information with social media at this time or in the future. I agree with @Roberto it is none of their business. So far I have not had anyone question me about if I am in possession of a weapon nor unless they are a peace officer would I confirm or deny if I were. I don’t want to give in to the fears of the anti gun public or the spirit of compromise many even here have with those calling for “reasonable” gun control even among our fellow USCCA members. Remember you don’t know who sees what you post and if they can find a way to attach that post to you. Just remember the days are long gone when you can post what you would do in a situation that bumps up against your legal rights. A good prosecutor might be able to get a transcript of your post. And never do it on Facebook, or Twitter. Just my new found opinion. And yes in the past I have broken that rule in the past.

If it is not posted conspicuously then I carry. If I made a mistake and they question me they have the option to trespass me off their property. The next day I will call my credit card company and dispute any charges.
The sign issue is abused a lot here in OR. For the most part only Federal buildings or Private Property owners can tell you no. Federal property is in the statutes and you should be able to figure that out, but private property unless posted clearly you never know. Again, worse case, is IF you get caught, they can trespass you off the property. Unless you refuse there will be no consequence. See how that goes after this next election.

Could there be legal ramifications of one of these unposted policies in a self defense situation? Many states have different rules regarding the circumstances under which you can defend yourself in your “home” vs in public. Many states consider your hotel room or campsite to be your “home” for the night. But if your “home” for the night has rules stating you cannot posses a firearm (likely buried in a document you don’t even get to see without digging for it) could you now be open to further criminal prosecution? Especially in anti gun states, many of which have laws stating you can only bring a firearm from a location you are allowed to have it to another location you are allowed to have it.

With Covid the hotels I’ve stayed at aren’t cleaning your room even if you want them to! They won’t even bring you fresh towels inside your room - they will leave them out side the door.

Welcome.

Not sure which states have a ‘firearm from location you are allowed to have it to a location you are allowed to have it’. I know of one or two I think.

The best is to check the state laws of where you are going, if you are traveling outside of your state. It is not likely you would have an easy time of traveling with a firearm if it is one of those states… such as New Jersey, where just having a firearm as you try to pass through might find you in difficulty.

Yep, kinda nice. Even your pocket change is still on the table when you check out on Friday morning. :joy:

I had that happen to me recently. Booked a late arrival, got in after 10p. Saw no sign on the door or the front desk. After my shower I was relaxing watching TV and reading the junk the put in the room. In their literature packet - No guns on property . Huh, I guess I will take mine back out to the car when I take my bad out in the morning and leave. I wore it in concealed (legally), and wore it out the same way. I later double checked the web site, saw no notice of it there either. Wasn’t the first time and probably won’t be my last. Post it up like it is supposed to be, I will stay somewhere else. Hide a small disclaimer where 99% of the people will never see it, I won’t lose any sleep.

Somebody mentioned their hotel has a right to just search their room. That’s crazy, I’ve never seen anything like that before. Maybe I need to look closer at the fine print but damn that seems intrusive. I stayed somewhere a month ago and I carried to my room, locked it in my travel safe, and hit it in my bag. I’m not going to take a road trip without it and then leave it in the car for a couple days. If somebody would’ve seen it on me as I walked to my room, then I’m not doing a good job at the “conceal” part of “conceal carry.”

How difficult is it to take your firearm with you when you want housekeeping to clean your room?

If you bring the topic up you are only asking for problems. Best to stay quiet, stay concealed, stay safe.

@Melvyn - my point was not that I had left my firearm in my hotel room. In this particular case, I did not have it with me (I flew and my CWP isn’t recognized by the destination state). My point is that housekeeping - AGAINST MY EXPRESSED WISHES - came in and cleaned anyway.

I have had housekeeping clean my room despite the do not disturb sign being on the door on a few occasions. One time they failed to close the door all the way so anyone could have gotten in. Definitely not a good idea to leave valuables in a hotel room.

I thought the topic was staying in hotels with firearms. Your complaint seems to be housekeeping cleaning your room when you expressed you did not want your room cleaned. I assumed your comment applied to the topic under discussion about staying in hotels WITH firearms.

Did you dig up a 15-month old post just to start an argument? Please pay attention to the post I quoted in my 12/2019 reply,

No argument
