Not sure if this is the right area to post this but…
Our friend drives a Salt truck for the county. Usually when he gets hit, he doesnt feel it. This time he did. Highway is closed and an investigation is undergoing. Wife drive by it and it was bad. They were trying to cut the other driver out of the pick up truck.
Besides, my democrat lawmakers tell me to defy ICE and ignore government orders! That government subsidized rolling roadblock has no right to be on MY highway in front of me!
Seriously though, I’m normally in the 70-80mph range on my drive home,… we got our first snow last night (whopping 1/4”) but I reigned my speed in, especially on curves and overpasses!
Winter driving can be fun!
It’s like drifting in the summertime at a racetrack,… just in slow motion,… on public roads,…. In your personal car…. With kids and pets in the way if you mess up!
The ‘City’ of Vaughn, New Mexico last year had to borrow ‘DAMAGED GUARDRAIL AHEAD’ signs last winter from neighboring Towns… They ran out!
Rural NM is the type of place where ‘residents’ often try to ‘BEAT THE TRAINS!’ going around the lighted, Clanging WARNING R/R Guards! NM 47/60 have BURN SCARS and Remains of Semi Trailers in both directions.
I often wonder as I drive for work I come upon a fresh incident scene and I see burned remains of Cargo off the side of the road and I wonder ‘Did I have anything shipped recently?’…
Otherwise the “snow tire” crowd stuck in the gutter in low level conditions would be out in much WORSE Conditions!
Those of us who can actually “drive” can negotiate blizzard conditions in 2wd with “all terrain” tires because we understand throttle, speed, and momentum control, as well as how to correct for any loss of one of those! (I didn’t put traction in there because on ice that’s imaginary anyway! )
I used to have video of me blasting up a snowed in street in a UPS delivery truck…. (2006 blizzard,… s…. (We had like 3 inside 2 months!) Foot to two feet of standing snow not plowed….. just floorboarded throttle and full chains spinning plus a little forward momentum!
I’d make it to my stop, overshoot by 30-40 feet, then slam it in reverse and back up in my ruts to do the delivery.
Then I had a nice run up to get momentum going again!
I’ve spent hours shoveling out from stuck…. And have been pulled out by farm tractors…. But mostly I kept myself out of bad ways by simply knowing how to drive and what my vehicle could do…. (Generally)
Living in AK, snow, blizzards, etc dont bother me, its the other drivers that makes driving a PIA.
Sister went to MI vs OSU game yesterday. The 90 mile drive was a ■■■■ show. Folks with crappy tires or think that throttle is the answer caused alot of mayhem on the roads.
Ill pull some folks out but if you pass me at 80 and then go in the ditch, ill just wave as I go by
Something I used to see was 4 wheel drive going 70 mph with 3” of snow on the road. 4 we may help you go faster, but it doesn’t help you stop faster..
Another “game” I used to play was over/under on cars in the median or shoulder. I worked for the phone company. I had to go to work no matter what weather we had
I do like to drive a bit faster than some but I do know when to slow down and drive for conditions. Now I’m not gonna drive 25mph with my hazards on like what alot around here do, bit caution is there
I live in Las Vegas where we have no snow, but we have an abundance of idiots, aggressice drivers, speeders, and fools running red lights.. They have little respect for others, and sadly, due to lack of law enforcement, they get away with it.
Much further South and you wind up in the Gulf Of America, where I live. We very rarely get snow but man when we do, it’s a cluster of epic proportions. My daily driver is a Nissan Z370 very small and light 2 seater. As I drive around in snow I will see everything from 4 wheel drives and even semi’s in the ditch. Been cussed out many a time because I won’t stop and pull there car/truck/whatever out of the ditch. I’m always dumbfounded by those who think my little 2 seater is going to pull anything out of a ditch. But if any snow accumulates at all the entire State closes, and the 5 alarm sh*t show starts.
‘SNOW COMING!’ All of The Southwest clutches their Pearls! (Kinda funny that!) Last SNOWFALL
was two days ago and MOST of the ‘Taxi’ Long haulers threatened to call in sick! (we got less than an inch..so sad! A lot of folk’s out here buy 4x4’s and Pick up’s w/ Lift kits (and prolly NEVER put them in 4 wheel drive (much less a Mesa crawling Fun day!. Some never even get dirty!
Garaged 4x4’s…..I never thought I’d see this day come.
(Edit: I keep thinking about ‘Reverend Jim’ in the TV show ‘Taxi’ taking his written Drivers exam! when I see this Topic ‘Sloooooooooooooooooooooow Down!’ Priceless! )
