What did they do wrong, what did they do right?
How would you change things if you were in their group?

The saddest realization of this movie is that Jim did not take his own survival serious until his friend (brother?) Cody died for it. That is what was wrong with this movie, and it is a classic example for the Johari Window.
Had Jim been more focused, the movie would have turned out differently.
What even more sucks, is he learned nothing from Cody, even after he died.
I’m not sure he would survive much longer.
It’s a movie, if it was written differently it would be different… Jeez
Maybe Jim FUBAR’d his lines as they were written. You just can’t tell with actors now days.

You are either a defender or you are on the offense.
When you are the defense, the place being defended needs to be defendable. It also has to have an alternate defendable location. The place being defended needs to have minimal avenues of access making it easier to defend and harder to get attacked.
When multiple people were approaching their house there were no defensive shots fired, defending their selves. It may even had discouraged any further actions against them at the time.
With the people approaching asking for help or just not acting aggressive, there is no indication of what the actual situation was with everything going on.
Overall, there is not enough information to determine to what extent of isolation a group or a person needs to pursue.
