Trying to get in before New Mexico’s laws change, I have ordered a shotgun. The purpose of my shotgun is defense against drones. I understand that there are other uses for a shotgun, but that’s the reason behind the gun.
I need recommendations for an optic. I have a preference for dual-illuminated optics I don’t have to remember to turn on, but the only company I know of that does this is meprolight, and their shotgun optics seem to be shotgun-specific, and the one I got has a rail instead of a place for a plate.
Also, what type of reticle should I be looking for? I can see where a dot would be good for a slug, but surely it’s not useful for shot?
To be perfectly honest, iron sites on a shotgun are all you will need for a drone, anything more than that and it’s a waste of money. If you want go with a red dot, it may give you a little more accuracy I guess but what you are really looking for is to hit it with the spread. Just go with what you would use for hunting fowl, it’s the exact same concept.
Also how many drones do you have flying over you that you want to start shooting them down, you may want to look into your local regulations. It get’s tricky when dealing with drones, you don’t own the air above your property.
Completely understand the concern, with commercial drones coming out of China being super cheap and along with the technology for them to have anti jamming systems and carry payloads these toys can be converted to weapons of war fairly easily. Practice clay shooting with your new shotgun, if you feel a site is needed and will help you, invest in one. I think the bead or iron sights will be all you need with buck shot.
Get a cheapo Rem 870 with a 24" barrel choked for trap and skeet, then go shoot lots of skeet with open sights. Use a bird gun for things that act like birds.
Cut my field gun down many years ago. A vent rib that I didn’t even bother replacing the brass bead on. I aim, $hit explodes.
Now I admit that I do not know at what range a drone might need be engaged and even if I would ever have the need to engage a drone. I am however confident at that range buckshot with iron sights could defeat said drones. If a slug were however needed in the case of a armored drone??? IDK? Maybe I’m outgunned.
I agree with the majority here. I keep just an iron bead on my 590A1. It is basically for home defense, but I do like to take it to the trap range now and then. The bead works great, me not so much. I think shooting trap would be the closest practice for taking drones out. I live in town now and would be jailed immediately for shooting at a drone for multiple reasons. In 4 years we will retire and we have 30 acres purchased to live on. I guarantee any drone flying over my property then will be target practice. They will need to prove I wasn’t just practicing legally on my own land and accidently hit a mechanical clay.
I would think 2.75" shells with 6 to 7.5 shot would work best.
I can not believe our government is still wasting money on fighter jets… Like the F-47 20 billion in waste DOGE oh DOGE .. Do something real, kill this … Stop trying to dig up dead people… This is real waste …
Back to shot gun sights the ones every one has is the best but thats not a for all for me on my benneli m90 vent rib pistol grip i have tru glo dual green rear and a red front fiber optic works for me of cource the front bead works also if it works for you then thats the best one
