Home defense shotguns

Rock Island Armory VRF14 12 Gauge

I’ve read that these have feeding issues. Does anyone have experience with one of these?

From watching the reviews by a couple of trusted people, the only problem seen was magazine faults, not the weapon. There are certain break-in requirements for weight and fps shells, that if followed, should make sure it operates reliably in the future. Now you make me want one but will have to check commiefornia rules to see allowed, Otherwise will settle for the new Mossberg security 88 with buckshot for home.

For home defense, my other choice is the Mossberg 590S but I like the semi auto function of the VRF14. Finding either one to test drive may present a problem.

I have a very old Remington 870 12 GA. Yup, it is a bit heavy and has the regular, modified, barrel. Once upon a time it brought down some birds. And, it is loaded with 3" mag shells. As some old actor liked to say, “I pity the sucker…”.

Standard manufacturing DP-12

It’s heavy sure…. But 14 rounds of 2 3/4 buckshot says definitely wrong house MF’er!:skull:

Because I’m a poor man, I’ll be getting a Mossberg 88… less than $200.

The Mossberg 88 passed James Reeves 500 round burn down test as well. I have a 500, little less plastic but very similar. Don’t shoot it much but it’s been 100%.

If you are considering it for home defense, be sure to pick one with the 18.5" barrel.
Being a totally uneducated shotgunner, I went for a Maverick 88 for my first one based on cost and off-the-shelf availability at Academy. I picked up the 28" barrel model, assuming that would be best. Well, it was fine for my first lesson and general field shooting. I do like it.
However, I have since learned that if you need to move around the house in response to intruders, that long barrel is a significant encumbrance going through doorways and rounding corners.
That said, also remember that the safest tactic for home defense against intruders is to hide in a secure closet and only shoot if they break into your secure position. Trying to clear a house room by room by yourself is extremely dangerous not only for you, but also for any friends and family who may also be in the dwelling.
Also, get and use a sling!

Same here.
If I have $800+ to burn, I’ll buy the AR-style VRF

Supplemental Info: THe Maverick site shows they have one model as a security/field combo that ships with two barrels:

MSRP $306.00

No experience with it and 0% chance I spend money on something that I probably would never trust.

For home defense my go-to is a high quality 5.56 carbine.

For a home defense shotgun I have a Benelli

Honestly for me if all I could afford was a Maverick, I’d just stick to my daily carry Glock as HD and train more with it

I don’t know anything about that particular shotgun. One thing I have seen mentioned around the internet is that some people are having issues with shotgun shells stored long term in the magazines. Unlike in a traditional tube fed shotgun, shells in the magazine are subjected to pressure from the sides which can cause the plastic shells to deform and lead to potential feeding issues.

I’ve never seen one till I saw ur pic , I want the little double barrel KelTec pump 12 ga.
Having said that I have not heard anything negative about the one in your pic either

Standard huh? That’s wild I have their little fold up .22 mag revolver, I haven’t seen anything else they made till I just saw ur pic of yours . That’s real nice , ain’t gotta worry about swinging the barrel around and hitting anything with that.

I have heard that magazine fed shotguns have problems feeding. That is why I went with a Mossburg semi.

Old school. REM. 1100, 8 round tube, 2-3/4 slugs. Taken many deer with this setup. Short, light, fast and very accurate to 125 yards with open sights. Simple and super reliable.

You must live in a very big house with very wide doorways

Why would one use slugs for home defence, as opposed to #4 buck? Overpenetration is a concern.

Can you trust a semi-auto action to cycle reliably with #4 buck though. Mini shells out of question.

I have an old-school Rem1100 with an eight round tube. The barrel must be a little bit longer because it isn’t a short gun and it isn’t a light gun.

The gun can be trusted to cycle just don’t use low base skeet load in it
