To be fair, some semi-auto shotguns require shells the travel at least 1200 FPS. Low brass shells are out of the question. I know; I have one that’s persnickety.
That may be something to consider.

Actually it’s no longer than an AR. 18” barrel. My primary home defense is a pistol. This, if necessary, would be mt go to defense shotgun.
REM 1100
27” barrel
Over all length 47 “
I’ve always wondered what 5-0 was using.
The Remington 870 shotgun is often used by officers in the TV series Hawaii Five-O. The shotgun is featured in both the original 1968 series and the 2010 reboot
What type of gun do you guys think is the best for home defence?
The one that is accessible.
That one is my dogs harness it was an accident lol
I got a better one of the other side
To all who responded, thank you for your feedback. I’ve used long 47" plus shotguns in skeet shooting. I’m also familiar with the Mossberg and Remingtons short barrelled models. My background includes training and real life experience in room clearing and I’ve used them as a QRF member aboard Navy ships
As @Craig_AR pointed out, in a home invasion scenario, it’s best to barricade and call for help but that may not always be an option if you don’t have a cell phone at hand. The short barrel Remington measures 38.5” overall. That’s over a foot longer than the VRF14 at 26”.
I was smitten with the sexy looking VFR 14 especially given that it’s not classified as a shotgun by the ATF and doesn’t require any red tape but given the proven reliability of pump actions, I’ll play it safe and order the trusted LEO Remington workhorse.
Best, MAGA
I purchased a Winchester Extreme Defender 12GA shotgun and I love it. Today I purchased some Winchester SuperTarget track skeet and sporting clays loads. The associate at the gun store mentioned to me that other customers have been using them for their home defense shotgun. They were on sale 100 rounds for $38. I will be going to the range within the next few days to test them out. Will update you When I do so. A few more customers purchased them also while I was there.
Many years ago we lived in a small apartment in Wasilla AK, my primary was a double barrel coach gun with 7 1/2shot. For that situation it would have worked.
If i would have torched off both barrels, it would have covered the majority of the apartment. Back up was my 1911.
Id be doing alot of repairs and probably lose my down payment but whatever
I also have a 870 but also have a mossberg 500 with pistol grip
But seriously if you had to choose one what would you pick.
It really depends. First and foremost it should be a firearm that you are comfortable and competent enough with to use effectively under the extreme stress of a self defense situation.
Then there are factors like the size and type of your home. Is it a rural house where you may need to take longer shots to defend from an attack from the edge of your property? Is it an apartment where you have to worry about missed rounds going into your neighbors apartment? Are you going to have both hands free or might you have to grab a family member and drag them to your safe area? Etc……
I would argue that a shorter barrel semi auto rifle or pistol in .223/5.56 with a standard capacity 20 to 30 round magazine with a sound suppressor would be very hard to beat for the vast majority of home defense situations.
Though for me, my primary self defense tool is a 9mm pistol with an extended magazine and mounted light because I do have to worry about getting family members to our safe area and want to have a free hand to do that. Plus I feel very confident in my ability to use it effectively at in house ranges and even a little further.
Quality pump actions can be very reliable but are prone to short stroking under stress which can render the gun unusable when you most need it. Especially if you have not gotten a significant amount of practice with them in simulated stressful situations.
Modern semi auto shotguns from reputable manufacturers like Benelli and Beretta have proven to be very reliable and leave you with one less thing to worry about under stress since they do the reloading for you. But they do tend to be pricier than pump shotguns and the less reliable cheap semi autos.
This happens more often than people who don’t compete would think, simply under the pressure of a clock and other people watching.
In practice, a less-than-highly-trained shooter is, IMO and IME, less reliable with a pump than with a quality semi auto shooting ammo it has proven reliable with.
A pump shotgun is one of the most demanding common firearms to run well
KISS
If you can aim a firearm onto a target center mass and squeeze a trigger in a matter of urgency…that target is out of the equation. In all likelihood any threat beyond the first will or would be weighing their options while you are racking the next round into the chamber.
Doesn’t need to be anything other than a multiple round conveyance of effective ordinance on close range threats.
Don’t overthink this $hit.
