Sharpening Versus Steeling - Part I

Lately, I’ve seen sharpening systems going for OBSCENE prices - including an industrial machine for over $13K. Years ago, I bought a GATCO (Great American Tool Company) “Edgemate Ultimate Diamond” kit for $65 at the time, and you can still get one for less than $100. Each half of the knife-clamp has integral guide-slots for six angles - from 11-to-30 degrees, and a recessed slot for pocketknives. The diamond hones are marked and color-coded for grits, with safety rails to protect fingers. It also comes with a triangular hone for serrated knives The steel guide-rods extend and retract into their handles. One hone that’s always been sold separately is their XX-fine ceramic for a final polish and finish. Complete color instructions are bonded inside the snap- lid of the neat little case the kit’s packed in. Their “EasyGrip” stand is an extra, and you can get extra clamps, hones, etc., as well.

I always find a link handy. Looks good :+1:

I personally use two DMT 4"X10" Diamond “stones” that gives a total of 4 grits. In addition, I use a 14" round steel I purchased at a fishing show decades ago and a strop. Will a a link when I get back to my computer. I admit I do have a couple hundred dollars invested.
