Scenario based training for conceal carriers

You are in a restaurant having dinner out with your wife and you are armed with your concealed carry firearm. You observe 2 individuals wearing masks walk in and go directly to the register and announce a robbery. The person at the register complies and gives up the money and the 2 individuals leave. How would you handle this scenario? Discussion

I would run into a phone booth change into my Superman costume, apprehend the two hoodlums and bring them back to the restaurant to return the money and apologize to the cashier. Either that or call the police and give them a description of the two burglars.

Agree 100 percent with your answer. That is what I would do. If they are not threatening anyone else in the establishment just continue eating. But we must realize that there are a lot of untrained conceal carriers out there so we must be aware of that. What will they do in this situation?

I also agree. I carry to protect myself and my family … Others if eminent death is going to occur . Let the police hand the armed robbery, Not called for a murder . No one needs a hero … Why i say this is because to me the only hero’s are dead …
The ones that gave their lives to save us all …

Wannabe Heroes or Hero Syndrome puts others at risk (unintentionally) most cases … Just because someone has a mental issue doesn’t preclude them from having good intentions .

I resemble that remark.

@Johnnyq60 Just as others have responded. Get a good description of the two subjects, and call 911. One may have a concealed carry firearm, being the grey man, and the restaurant may be a “Gun Free Zone”. The robbery in question goes easy peezy, without any other incident, just be a good witness, and let police and the restaurant handle the situation. HOWEVER!!! As you mentioned that we must realize there are a lot of untrained conceal carriers out there so we must be aware of that. So, for those that DON’T TRAIN, happen to be in that restaurant, and react to the robbery while in progress can surely turn the whole situation into a chaotic scene and endanger everyone in the restaurant especially if the robbers are also armed, and bullets start flying everywhere. It’s so important for everyone to get the proper training if one chooses to possess and conceal carry a firearm. Know when one can shoot, and when one cannot shoot.

As long as they don’t open fire, I’ll continue with my meal-but keeping a watchful eye on the BGs and subtly increasing access to my CC. The restaurants money isn’t mine so it’s not my responsibility. I’ll try for as accurate a description of the BGs (height, est. weight, clothing, etc), but that’s it. Pretty sure the restaurant will still want me to pay for my meal afterwards, in spite of the “trauma” that my family and/or I was exposed as a result of this crime.

watch and be ready incase it goes sideways, call 911 when safe to do so and get as much info as possible to give to the police when they get there.

I’m not harmed so best move would be to call 911 then order dessert.

If you report the bad guys and they get their money back maybe then you will get a free meal.

But, it’s a gun-free zone!?!?

It was a happy ending as far as I’m concerned.
I’m thankful for not being in a situation like that. I imagine the entire time it takes for the thieves to commit the crime would be nerve wracking for the customers.
Unknown while in progress is if the thugs would target us next.
I would most likely have moved my wife where she’s less likely to be harmed.

Wise to bring attention to myself?

In your scenario you don’t say if they come in with a drawn gun or other weapon. Making this a strong arm robbery. I think I would watch them as best I can without drawing attention to myself. Not my circus not my monkeys.

Now if they come in weapon out that is a danger to everybody close. There is still a, IIRC 75%, chance of a person getting hurt by the perps even with everyone complying. Bringing this down to how many people are standing around where the action is happening. If I think I’ll hit an innocent, I will be a witness. Otherwise I’ll take my shot when I have the advantage.

I concur with all answers listed above except the one about the Superman costume. I’m more of an Incredibles fan.

Sit calmly (as calm as you can manage, anyway) and get as much information visually as possible to relate to LE. Do not draw attention to yourself. Do not start shooting unless they start shooting first. At that time, pick your targets carefully and exercise exceptional marksmanship.

That is correct I did not mention a gun or any sort of weapon. That is why the correct response is to continue eating and just be a good witness or observe. But even if they were armed it is best to observe because you don’t want to start a shootout in a restaurant with innocent civilians in the restaurant.

In general I don’t agree with you. Too many videos out there of the bad guy(s) shyting their pants and running for the door. Yes there are videos of the BG winging off crazy shots but most of them are when are when they are being chased. I ain’t chasing. I have family and people around me that can get injured. They need my protection more.

Besides, if I did my job correctly the bad guy(s) is being taken out on a stretcher.

As long as no one’s life was in immediate danger, scan front and rear doors, know my exits and anything that can provide cover. ( normally done prior to entering, usually I send in a recon team! )
Look for the closest liberal, the one with the mask, or the female with the shaved blue head! Use as temporary cover!

Continue with my meal, don’t panic the wife!
To my wife, “don’t look, ( standard operating procedure, I ALWAYS face the door ) what ever I say to do, do without question “.
We’re not exactly sprinters anymore!
Panic will get you killed or injured.

The dollar is not that valuable anymore! Let’em have it!
Obviously they need it more than me!

Had they come in, guns blazing, remain calm. Their focus is on the cash register until it’s not. Then act accordingly. Front sight, front sight, double tap, my bad “controlled pairs”.

This is what happens when everyone panics at the same time, people get injured!

I had a similar experience as a teenager after moving to Los Angeles. After cruising up and down Hollywood Blvd and watching the freak show, a friend and I pulled into a coffee shop before heading home. The name is etched in my memory: Tiny Naylors.
My buddy and I are sitting at the counter drinking coffee and there’s a commotion in the entrance lobby. I glance towards it over my right shoulder and see a middle aged couple trying to exit the restaurant but being blocked in by 2 young black dudes, one of them carrying a rifle.
The exiting couple steps back into the restaurant and one of the robbers yells at the restaurant patrons to hand over their wallets while the other tells the cashier to empty the register.
As this is happening, I remember the sound of things hitting the floor.
There was a man at the counter next to us. He continued to eat his pie and drink his coffee as everyone else stood as ordered by the robbers. The guy with the rifle hit him on the head with the butt of the rifle. The victim;s reaction made it obvious that he was deaf and had no idea what hit him. I hid my cheap watch under my sleeve but they got my wallet with my driver’s license and about twenty bucks in it. (After the robbers left, I learned that the noise of things hitting the floors was from people throwing their wallets under tables to prevent them from being taken).

The lessons learned on that day stayed with me and were reinforced in professional training. In a restaurant, ideally, I sit facing the entrance and have eyes on an escape route. That often means the kitchen which will always have a back door.

I’d order dessert and wait for the cops so I could give my witness statement.
