Red dot sight for California-compliant M&P Shield Plus?

I have a dumb question - can a red dot sight be mounted on a California-compliant M&P Shield Plus 9 mm 3.1”? It has an indicator that pops up when a round is in the chamber, so I wasn’t sure if it was still possible to get a red dot sight on it.

Technically you can do this, but you will have to remove the indicator bar first.

And then we have a legal question - can you remove it and still be California compliant?

I found Crimson Trace dovetail adapter along with a Romeo 5 (IIRC) worked. However, I didn’t like it. I left the front site and found this really needed a riser. I want a backup in case the red dot fails. A riser would be another $80 or so (a few years ago).

Good luck.

That might be a question for a gun rights attorney.

Dovetail adapter is a good option if you have to keep indicator…. but be prepared to get used to big HoB… which is a weird shooting experience with a handgun :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Thanks everyone for your input. I will probably just keep using the iron sights for my Shield, but perhaps down the road I will get another brand of handgun that is optics ready.

@Tom242 Please, there is no such thing as a dumb question. Just stupid people—those are the ones that don’t ask questions and are content to stay ignorant. After all, it is how we learn, and most of us here love to help. So please keep the questions coming.

Check me on this, but didn’t CA ban the addition of optics, lasers and lights on carry guns?

Maybe they did previously, but I don’t think that is the case anymore. The laws are constantly changing here in crazy Calunicornia

I forgot to ask if that was one of the guns on your permit.

This :backhand_index_pointing_up::backhand_index_pointing_up::backhand_index_pointing_up:still amazes me.

Yes, my Shield plus 9mm is the only one on my CCW permit

OT - Sorry, but I have to chuckle every time I see any statement like ‘California compliant‘. Are there any items that DON’T need to be California compliant these days?

They have compliant guns, cars, appliances, food, sodas, fuels, speech, everything else probably including condoms.

Why don’t they just become their own country and be done with it? The rest of the lower 47 would thank them.

(Soapbox off…)

Call your senator to discuss this.

This community cannot help you with this issue…

I agree, but remember that there are millions of conservatives here that are held hostage by our one party government that is entrenched in CA. 38% of Californian’s voted for Trump in the last election, which equates to 14.8 million people. That is more that the total populations of 46 of the 50 states.

And that number’s subject to adjustment due to suspected voter rolls issues. Let’s see how we do with midterms.

Going back to the OT, I doubt we’re allowed to alter guns on permit.

Well that makes the decision an easy one. If my gun initially had a red dot sight at the time I qualified it during the CCW class, would that sight be listed on the actual CCW permit?

The sight itself isn’t listed.
