Purchasing firearms in MA, with new bill going into law

I have a legal question regarding the new law going into effect, 10/23/24 in MA.

I’m lookin to purchase an AR, preferably Preban ‘94.
From my understanding anything bought/possessed in MA by/before 8/1 is considered grandfathered. If I were to purchase an AR from someone in MA(Preban) is it subject to the AWB criteria of only 2 evil features or does that still not count because it’s ‘94?

I’m also looking at buying a mini 14 from a dealer(new) before 10/23, is this something that would then become illegal in the state of Ma? I understand the uncertainty but just looking for guidance on the way I should go about purchasing either or both of these.

Thanks in advance

I commiserate with you, from California.

Methinks a dealer wouldn’t sell what’s illegal, assuming it’s local.

I once bought an AR online from a store in TN.
LGS staff apparently opened my box for the first time.

They had a brief discussion, raised their hands like, “well, it looks featureless to me so it must be legal.”

Yeah it’s brutal here, and only getting worse.
I think a dealer wouldn’t be selling something they shouldn’t, most shops are pretty good about that. I’m more inclined to grabbed the mini14 for now, eventually grab an AR, if and when I move out of this state.

That’s wild that they just assumed it was good to go, haha flying under the radar big time.
Did you ever have it modified or even sell it to you?

@Michael1989 Welcome to our community, we are glad to have you with us. :slightly_smiling_face:

Why would you think we in the community would know how to interpret MA. laws when the politicians who voted them in don’t even know or understand what they voted for?
We actually get this type of questions fairly often from anti-2A states.
Our stock answer is, “FLEE BROTHER FLEE”. :scream:

Pretty sure once 10/23 comes, anything not owned before 8/1/24 is illegal, pre-94 or not… im looking into if we get the petition signed, and pushed back til a vote in 2026, if that vote went for it, would 8/1/24 still be the grandfather date

I wish that was true … but majority of LGS owners dont know how this law being interpreted either yet

There may be some members from MA, give a shout out.

Also, check our USCCA reciprocity webpage that addresses state law requirements for CCW.

Start there for the basics. If they don’t address your issue try an AI search engine that usually drills down to the nitty gritty of any topic very quickly.

We got al kinds of subject categories to search, including regional NE as Eastern - North is one:

O ya, on my post last night i forgot to mention they also suspended training for FFLs to explain what they can and cant actually sell… :man_facepalming:t2::man_facepalming:t2::man_facepalming:t2:
