Pandemic Purchases: Did you buy a new gun this weekend?

Did not really intend to, just needed to get out of the house. Glad I did though, picked up a sweet full size Sig P320 LNIB with 2 mags in 45acp for 350. Gun store was crazy busy, looked like a Black Friday sale.

I’ll bet you are a super star salesperson. Don’t sell yourself short; I’m sure others that know you, don’t.

@Dawn

I, absolutely believe it is, short term. But if/when life gets back to a semblance of normalcy those who changed their views on guns will forget the paralyzing fear of the reality that caused them to change in the first place.

Then it will be back to guns are evil.

If that happens, do you think they’ll surrender their guns to the police or sell them?

@Dawn

My hope is they will keep them. Maybe even get some education and training, and realize, that having a gun and not needing it beats the stew out of needing a gun and not having it.

What was your experience this past weekend, did you sell to a lot of first time buyers?

I am hoping that maybe as Covid 19 scare wears off or burns out gun stores will follow up with first time buyers and teach them how to secure them, 4 safety rules, the basics.

That knowing you are not a victim begging for mercy, but a protector, will be more powerful.

But that’s my optimism talking. My realistic side says we will see an upsurge in mistakes in gun handling and “guns r bad” again will be the same old message. At least here in Alabama the guns r bad stories are bad have abated.

I’ll trade them guns for toilet paper.

People who do not know anything about firearms (or getting training on how to use them) now running out and buying them to “feel safe” are terrifying. One might argue that these people ARE a danger to the rest of us. There are so many ways that this could derail. Kids having access. Parent using without training. Users using the wrong ammo. Etc. I’m not happy about that at all!

@Brad… you’ve just touched the problem discussed already… And YES that is a huge problem. And I’m not happy as well… even more, I’ve been always unhappy about this!
Hopefully all people saying : “but this is our right to bear arms” can see it now…

[On the single part but I’m most certanily not right…When it comes in comparison to women though! haha]

This is quite in line with motorcycling. I can’t tell you how many people I talk to who’s goal is to own a motorcycle. If you love looking at them great (same with firearms). But there is a certain responsibility that comes with even that. And then a newbie using anything opens a whole different can of worms. Can they claim being a novice when something goes sideways, just like our getting into hot water with training with some saying we should have been more in control? It is an ugly situation. Maybe when things normalize, these folks will sell what they bought to us at a discount. :slight_smile:

I worry when I see folks who are ignorant about weapons buying them. I’d like to think that responsible shops would go over”basics” with newbies but based on what I’ve seen only a very few will even try to do so. Sadly, this sets up a scenario where things can quickly go wrong…

Don’t forget that we were all ignorant about guns at some point in our life.

@MikeBKY Yes we all were but for some reason we chose to be responsible and improve. In this instance I am hoping for a slew of folks to get into shooting or for a slew of folks with an unopened box of ammo and a brand new pistol to want to sell for cheap.

Cheers,

Sadly, most of your associates selling the firearms , especially in big box stores and farm centers are woefully unqualified to give even the newest of shooters advice or basic instruction

My Army buddy observed a panicky, agitated man at the gun counter of his local Wal Mart. He asked the guy for “any ammo that fits a 12 gauge”. The guy, in his wisdom, points to a box on the shelf, saying “those will work”. The man quickly grabs the box of 7 1/2 bird shot (not kidding), pays for them, and quickly leaves, clutching the box with two hands as he looks around nervously. Before my buddy could intervene, the guy vanished. He spoke to the counter guy but he seemed totally unconcerned.

Thanks for the joke Brett, I showed it to the wife and we both had a fun laugh together. :slight_smile:

I know of someone who sells guns as part of their job who turned away at least one person from buying a gun.

There was a guy that wanted a shotgun and didn’t seem to know much about guns. She handed him a bolt action rifle as a test and when he said “I’ll take it” she pushed training on him and did not sell him a gun.

I picked up a shiny new blue box Gen 5 Glock 19 MOS with Ameriglo sights this morning. Well, not shiny, but it is new.
