This exact situation happened here in Florida a few years back. Someone on I-75 saw a car pulled over by FHP, and the officer was down taking a terrible beating on the side of the highway. The concealed carrier pulled over and shot the assailant dead. The good Samaritan was treated very well by the FHP, and thanked for saving the officer’s life. The officer was pretty badly injured if I remember right.

I haven’t looked into New Mexico Law about this but my Heart and my Head say’s Protect the Leo. Right or Wrong I see a Badge in trouble (i.e: Beating/ shot at)
I WILL step in. No hesitation. That said, I don’t know if there would be repercussions against ME it really doesn’t matter. I do the right thing I still believe I will be protected by you know who

I’m the kind of guy who will jump in and aid if an officer needs assistance. I will do the same for a civilian on the street also. Or a Fire Fighter, Ambulance crew, High School teacher with a rowdy class. Doesn’t matter. If I am there and they need help, they will receive help.

As a matter of fact, here in MA, the officer would probably shake ur hand to thank u, then put the cuffs on all in one motion … another self defense shooting here yesterday… guy is charged at, tackled and put in a choke hold… fires one shot at the guy from the ground underneath him, and is arrested and charged with “assault and battery with a dangerous weapon”

In that scenario, i wouldn’t shoot first. Id intervine and be ready to. In the situation in the video, physical force would work, bad guy is focused on the cop, you have the element of surprise. Now if he comes up with the gun, gloves are off.
Yes, the baton is a weapon. Perp is focused on the cop. Shes gonna take a beating ɓut i still wouldnt shoot at this point.

Agreed, I would go physical intervention before opening fire…. Maybe not a full bull rush tackle as described in the video,… but a solid boot to the head with my pistol at low ready.
Instantly gets perp off the LEO
I’m already at advantage if the perp comes back at me.
Plus, if the perp is now on the ground so the third requirement for shooting is met. (Know what’s beyond your target… asphalt 
) any shots I take are safe as can be in that situation

It helps my response in that scenario that I have nearly two decades of hand to hand weapons combat training (midevil reenactment fighting and various martial arts)

Exactly, that put you in a good position to take the next necessary step. Bull rush and roll on the ground can significantly limit ones options in a scenario like this.
