I’ve never been in Oakland… but I’m visiting Chicago every other day.
You can say whatever you feel is right in your opinion… but for last 21 years I personally experienced ZERO violence problems in that city.
Everything is about when, where and how. If you know how to use that knowledge you will avoid issues.
I have another friend who says the same about Chicago.
Fair enough. Like I said, I avoided places mentioned in rap songs.
As for Oakland, for the first time in its history, In-N-Out shut down a branch.
We have similar situation in Chicago Southside… yeah.. that place is the worst part of the City…
Walgreens is closing their stores…. and I cannot blame Company for this move. Residents are upset… but whose fault is it? 
I don’t know any Company who wants to do business with people who rob them… 
I was there for a good amount of time(UK village, Gold Coast, Park Ridge etc) and I never had any issues, but going between 85th and 100th streets, try not to stop for the lights or signs.
