New here, what’s everyone think about less lethal options for those who prefer not to own firearms due to the responsibility that comes with firearms. What do you think of option out there such as Taser, Byrna and Grimburg less lethal options?
Pepper spray may be a better option, and martial arts.![]()
Learn American boxing, at least to learn how to maintain distance and get used to getting punched. For an e-stun device I wouldn’t bother with Taser and go with the biggest, highest voltage full contact device you can find, even a “tactical” flashlight with a reinforced bezel that can be used with submission / pain control techniques would be handy. There’s always pepper sprays and I’m a big fan lead filled leather saps. The are a lot of “less lethal” options all of which require training to use effectively.
For Byrnas and the like, if you’re in a situation requiring stand-off rubber bullets or pepper balls, you best be doing what the cops do and have a buddy standing by with the “or else” option. Just like Taser, Byrna promises the world, then are mysteriously silent when their product doesn’t work quite as well as advertised.
Not a fan of “less-lethal” that looks like a firearm. Police can legally shoot people that have bb/pellet guns that “look real.” Then there is someone calling the police because “someone has a gun.” Another is some states don’t allow CC of any handgun, replica nor bb/pellet gun. I also suspect a pepper ball or rubber ball is less effective than OC spray and not effective at close range.
OC gel spray does not look like a gun, and most people now-a-days know what that container looks like and those that have experienced it, don’t want to again. It is legal in most states and cities, and has a good range of effectiveness depending on the device. The gels are better than aerosol as they don’t mist and blowback in wind and less will get on you close-up.
Also consider Sabre. Seems to be much less expensive than Byrna.
I’m all about self defense, lethal, non-lethal, empty hand, impact weapon, edged weapon… To answer the question, pick one or maybe two and then get really really really good at both. For me I choose Hand to Hand (Krav Maga/Muay Thai/Ju Jitsu) basically MMA and a concealed firearm. We do train with edged weapons as well. Choose and then practice practice practice…
