I encountered this absurd VA law some years ago when helping my Korean War veteran father apply for long term care. It seems that the VA can and will strip you of the right to possess firearms if you appoint someone to assist you in applying for VA benefits, but can’t seem to report to the NICS people who are involuntarily committed to a mental institution or dishonorably discharged (like the Southerland Springs shooter some years ago). There have been efforts over the years to extend this VA insanity to Social Security recipients who appoint a representative to handle their social security claims or benefits. Our tax dollars at work.
